Job Overview
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Medical Referral & Prior Authorization Coordinator to join our healthcare team. In this vital role, you will serve as the primary point of contact for managing insurance prior authorizations and medical referrals, ensuring seamless communication between healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients. Your expertise will help facilitate timely approvals for medical services, optimize patient care, and maintain compliance with healthcare policies. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a dynamic healthcare environment while utilizing your strong organizational skills and medical knowledge.

Responsibilities

Coordinate and obtain insurance prior authorizations for a variety of medical procedures and treatments, ensuring compliance with insurance policies and managed care guidelines
Manage referral requests between healthcare providers, specialists, and insurance companies to facilitate patient access to necessary services
Verify patient insurance coverage, benefits, and eligibility using electronic health records (EHR) systems and other tools
Maintain accurate documentation of authorization requests, approvals, denials, and related correspondence in accordance with clinical confidentiality policies
Review medical records, clinical notes, and supporting documentation to ensure completeness for authorization submissions
Collaborate with medical office staff to ensure timely processing of referrals and prior authorizations while adhering to HIPAA regulations
Utilize medical coding skills such as CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), ICD-9/ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases), and ICD coding to support accurate billing and documentation processes
Communicate effectively with patients regarding authorization status, required documentation, or additional steps needed for approval
Stay informed about updates in health insurance policies, managed care procedures, and relevant regulations affecting authorization processes

Skills

Strong knowledge of HIPAA regulations and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality at all times
Proficiency in medical terminology, medical records management, and electronic health records (EHR/EHR) systems
Experience with medical coding including CPT coding, ICD-9/ICD-10 coding, and ICD coding practices
Familiarity with health insurance policies, managed care processes, insurance verification procedures, and prior authorization workflows
Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients, providers, and insurance representatives
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and correspondence purposes
Knowledge of clinical confidentiality policies combined with meticulous attention to detail in handling sensitive information
Previous experience working in a medical office or healthcare setting is preferred but not required; strong organizational skills are essential
