Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Staff Accountant supports the accounting and administrative needs of a portfolio of captive insurance companies and risk retention groups managed by Risk Services. The role is responsible for accurate financial records, timely client reporting, account reconciliations, regulatory support, and coordination with clients, service providers, senior management, and state insurance regulators.

This position requires sound accounting judgment, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage recurring deadlines in a regulated insurance environment.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Prepare timely financial statements and related financial reporting packages for assigned client companies.
Maintain accurate corporate accounting records, including general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
Compile financial data for quarterly and annual close processes, including review of detail for completeness, consistency, and appropriate support.
Reconcile bank accounts, investment activity, receivables, payables, intercompany activity, and other balance sheet accounts as assigned.
Assist with regulatory filings, statutory reporting, and other compliance related deliverables for captive insurance companies and risk retention groups.
Support client account management by responding to routine client requests, coordinating required documentation, and escalating issues when appropriate.
Assist in the analysis of financial results, variances, and account activity, and prepare clear explanations for management review.
Maintain organized workpapers and documentation that support financial reporting, audit requests, regulatory inquiries, and internal review.
Coordinate with auditors, actuaries, banks, investment managers, service providers, and regulators as directed by management.
Support preparation for board meetings, including financial materials, administrative records, and follow up items as assigned.
Perform routine accounting and administrative tasks accurately and within established deadlines.
Participate in special projects and process improvement efforts as requested by management.
Travel periodically for client meetings, board meetings, or other business needs, if required.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
Working knowledge of accounting principles and financial statement preparation.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities with accuracy and accountability.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Analytical skills sufficient to review financial data, identify variances, and present supportable conclusions.
Ability to work effectively with clients, management, employees, and external service providers.
Professional judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.

Working Relationship and Supervision

The Staff Accountant works under the supervision of the Accounting Manager and coordinates with senior management, clients, external service providers, and regulatory contacts as assigned. The role is expected to exercise care, accountability, and sound professional judgment within established procedures and management direction.
