Job Title: Development Director

Reports To: Executive Director

About Afghan Health Initiative

Afghan Health Initiative (AHI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering immigrant and refugee communities through culturally and linguistically appropriate social services, educational support, and health and wellness resources. We strive to foster equitable access to opportunities that promote health, well-being, and economic growth. Our mission is guided by a deep commitment to community-centered care, cultural humility, and building trust with the people we serve.

Position Overview

The Development Director owns AHI’s overall development program, setting fundraising strategy, growing and diversifying revenue, and building the donor relationships and team capacity needed to sustain AHI’s mission over the long term. This position is ideal for a strategic fundraising leader who can set direction, build relationships at the highest level, and lead a development team.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director sets AHI’s annual and multi-year fundraising strategy, manages a portfolio of major individual, corporate, and foundation donors, supervises development staff, and partners with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to grow AHI’s philanthropic capacity.

Strategy & Revenue Growth

Develop and lead AHI’s annual and multi-year development strategy, including revenue goals and diversification targets across individual, corporate, foundation, and government funding.
Build and manage the development department’s operating budget in partnership with the Executive Director.
Track fundraising performance against goals and report progress regularly to the Executive Director and Board.
Set organization-wide fundraising priorities and translate them into team-level goals for the Development Team.

Major Donor Relations

Personally manage and grow a portfolio of major individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
Lead cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for AHI’s top-tier and principal-level donors.
Represent AHI at high-level donor meetings, briefings, and community events.
Ensure accurate donor records and moves management practices are maintained in AHI’s CRM.

Team Leadership

Supervise and support development staff, including the Grant Writer and Philanthropy Officer, providing coaching, goal-setting, and performance management.
Build development infrastructure, systems, and processes to support a growing team.
Set priorities for grant strategy and institutional giving, delegating execution to the Grant Writer.
Foster a collaborative, mission-driven culture across the development function.

Board & Organizational Partnership

Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to engage board members in fundraising efforts.
Prepare development updates and materials for Board meetings.
Serve as AHI’s primary spokesperson on fundraising and philanthropic matters.
Oversee AHI’s fundraising campaigns, appeals, and donor events, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business, communications, or a related field preferred.
5+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit development, with demonstrated success setting fundraising strategy and meeting revenue goals.
Experience supervising or mentoring development staff.
Proven track record cultivating and soliciting major individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
Strong strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication and relationship-building skills.
Familiarity with donor databases or CRM systems such as Bloomerang, Salesforce, or Raiser’s Edge.
Knowledge of immigrant and refugee communities, with a culturally responsive and trauma-informed approach.

Compensation & Benefits:

Annual Salary: $80,000–$95,000 commensurate with experience
