Under the supervision of licensed staff members, assist in providing patient care in a clinical environment, utilize appropriate equipment and resources, prepares records, and maintains a clean and safe environment for patients.

Job Qualifications

Education

High school graduate or equivalent

Licensure, Registry, Certification:

BLS Certification Preferred
Certified Nurse Aide preferred

Proficient in note taking/documentation

Experience

Prior Work Experience

One year of experience in a medical setting preferred

Technical Training

Nursing assistant course desirable

Essential Functions

Primary responsibilities for all units assigned:

Assures that each patient receives quality care.

Performs personal care according to individuals’ needs including bathing, perineal care, shaving, grooming hair, mouth/oral care as condition warrants, and as directed, feeding patient and collecting specimens
Keeps patient room neat and tidy at all times, patient dry and free of secretions, and answers call lights promptly
Performs procedures designed to prevent physical deterioration of skin to include patient repositioning, giving skin care, getting patients out of bed, ambulating as directed, working gently and handling patients with special conditions in a specified manner and performing catheter care as directed
Provides age appropriate care

Provides clinical services and care for patients

Takes and records vital signs, glucometer readings, weight, and length measurements
Assist physicians and licensed staff with preparing patient’s for various types of examinations and procedures
Applies or changes dressings as requested
Performs basic life support skills in an emergency
Follows aseptic procedures and universal precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials
Assists physician and licensed staff with patient care

Provides respect to patients, family and co-workers

Avoids unnecessary exposure during care
Speaks politely to and considers preferences of patients
Includes patients in decision making
Introduces self and states why they are there
Refrains from engaging in casual conversations with coworkers in open areas in view of patients and visitors
Performs proper body substance isolation when handling potentially infectious materials or direct contact

Participates in patient care management

Reports important facts or observations to LVN, RN, or supervisor
Attends shift report and makes notes of facts that are important to nursing care
Assists in the interfacility transportation of patients

Assists with maintaining patient’s files

Prior to examination, obtains subjective information related to patient’s perception of health
Collects necessary information received concerning x-ray and laboratory reports, data from referring physicians, and surgical or other procedure reports for patient’s files

Maintains supplies and equipment

Ensures that inventory of necessary supplies and equipment is maintained for diagnostic and treatment procedures
Is responsible for stocking supplies in patients rooms and assures the cleanliness of the rooms
Cleans and prepares surgical instruments for sterilization

Functions proficiently in unit modalities across all nursing units

Maintains accurate and timely records according to hospital policy and procedures

Documents vital signs, intake and output, and appropriate portion of admission history as directed

Other duties as assigned

Responsibilities

Care for client’s (neonate <1yr, child/pediatric 1-11yrs, adolescent 12-17yrs, adult 18-55yrs, and geriatric >55yrs) throughout the facility while communicating positively and respectfully
Performs required tasks without prompting and adjusts appropriately to situations
Adheres to the attendance policy
Follows District and Department Policies
Follows infection control policies and procedures
Attends required meetings and in-services
Participates in Hospital District Safety Program and QA/PI Programs
Uses time and resources wisely
Maintains HIPAA, keeping patient and hospital confidentiality
Maintains adequate supplies of items needed to perform job, orders, or reports low items to supervisor
Practices proper phone etiquette, identifying self and department
Reports adverse events regarding patients, guests, or self to supervisor immediately
