Job Summary
DND Solutions is seeking an experienced Lead Structured Cabling Technician to supervise field crews performing structured cabling and network infrastructure installations at secure facilities throughout the United States.
This is a hands-on field leadership position. The Lead Technician will work alongside the installation crew while directing daily activities, coordinating manpower, monitoring production, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring assigned work is completed safely and in accordance with project requirements.
Projects may be performed inside correctional institutions, military installations, federal buildings, healthcare facilities, commercial facilities, and other controlled-access environments.
The successful candidate must be professional, dependable, organized, and capable of leading technicians while working within strict security, safety, scheduling, and documentation requirements. The ideal candidate has strong experience with copper and fiber optic cabling systems, understands applicable BICSI and TIA standards, and can independently manage the day-to-day field execution of a structured cabling project.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise structured cabling crews on projects located throughout the United States.
- Assign daily work activities and communicate production goals, installation requirements, and project priorities to field personnel.
- Perform hands-on installation work alongside the crew, including pathway installation, cable placement, termination, labeling, testing, and equipment mounting.
- Install, terminate, label, test, and troubleshoot Category 6, Category 6A, and fiber optic cabling systems.
- Oversee and perform installation of cable pathways, conduit, cable tray, telecommunications racks, cabinets, patch panels, wireless access points, switches, and related network infrastructure.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, cable schedules, rack elevations, floor plans, and network diagrams.
- Verify cabling is properly routed, supported, dressed, labeled, terminated, and tested in accordance with project specifications and applicable standards.
- Monitor technician performance, workmanship, attendance, productivity, and compliance with company policies.
- Conduct quality-control inspections and correct deficiencies before work is submitted for customer review.
- Coordinate daily activities with project management, general contractors, customer representatives, facility personnel, and other trades.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, labor records, production quantities, material usage, testing records, redlines, and as-built documentation.
- Identify material shortages, access restrictions, scope conflicts, schedule impacts, and field conditions that may affect project completion.
- Communicate project issues promptly and provide recommended solutions to project management.
- Ensure tools, equipment, test instruments, materials, and company property are properly maintained and secured.
- Enforce company safety requirements and site-specific safety procedures.
- Maintain professional conduct and ensure crew compliance with all security requirements while working in controlled-access facilities.
- Assist with employee training, skills development, and evaluation of field technicians.
- Support project closeout activities, including final testing, punch-list completion, documentation, and customer acceptance.
Position Details
- Travel: 100% nationwide travel is required.
- Schedule: Work schedules may include 8- to 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended rotations depending on project requirements.
- Travel Duration: Employees may remain away from home for multiple weeks at a time.
- Per Diem: Meals and lodging are provided or reimbursed in accordance with company travel policies.
- Transportation: Company transportation or reimbursed travel will be provided based on project requirements.
- Equipment: Company-required tools, test equipment, and personal protective equipment will be provided.
- Work Environment: Projects may involve active construction sites, occupied buildings, correctional institutions, military installations, healthcare facilities, exterior environments, confined spaces, and areas with limited access.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of structured cabling or low-voltage installation experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience leading technicians, supervising crews, or serving as a field foreman.
- Strong working knowledge of structured cabling installation methods and industry best practices.
- Experience installing and terminating Category 6 and Category 6A cabling.
- Experience installing, terminating, testing, and troubleshooting fiber optic cabling.
- Experience using copper certification testers, fiber light-source and power-meter test equipment, and related diagnostic tools.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, project specifications, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and rack elevations.
- Experience installing telecommunications racks, cabinets, patch panels, cable management, wireless access points, and related network hardware.
- Working knowledge of BICSI practices and applicable TIA standards.
- Ability to plan work, assign tasks, monitor production, and maintain project documentation.
- Ability to communicate effectively with technicians, project managers, customers, facility personnel, and other trades.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
- Ability to professionally manage crew performance and address workmanship or productivity issues.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass drug screening, criminal background checks, and project-specific security screening.
- Ability to comply with federal, military, correctional, and other controlled-access facility requirements.
- Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladders, use aerial lifts, work above ceilings, and perform work in confined or restricted spaces.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform physical installation work for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- BICSI Installer 1, Installer 2 Copper, Installer 2 Optical Fiber, or Technician certification.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Manufacturer certifications from Belden, CommScope, Corning, Leviton, Panduit, Siemon, or similar manufacturers.
- Experience installing cabling systems under a manufacturer warranty program.
- Experience supervising projects in federal correctional institutions, state prisons, military installations, government buildings, or other secure facilities.
- Experience with electronic security, wireless networking, audiovisual, access control, CCTV, or related low-voltage systems.
- Experience installing conduit, surface raceway, cable tray, J-hooks, sleeves, firestopping systems, and telecommunications grounding infrastructure.
- Experience completing copper certification testing, optical loss testing, and OTDR testing.
- Active federal or Department of Defense security clearance.
- Current aerial-lift, scissor-lift, fall-protection, first-aid, or CPR training.
