Full Job Description

Job Description:

6 Star Management is seeking a Controller to lead the accounting function at the corporate office in Calabasas, California. This position is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the company’s real estate portfolio, including financial reporting, month-end and year-end close, budgeting and forecasting, internal controls, compliance, cash management, and audit readiness across multiple entities.

The Controller will oversee two Senior Accountants and one Junior Accountant and will be responsible for establishing priorities, reviewing the team’s work, developing staff, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who combines strong technical accounting knowledge with sound judgment, accountability, and the ability to improve processes while working collaboratively with ownership, property management teams, and corporate staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Lead the corporate accounting function and directly supervise two Senior Accountants and one Junior Accountant

· Establish team priorities, assign responsibilities, review work, provide coaching, and ensure accounting deadlines are consistently met

· Manage the performance and professional development of the accounting team

· Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes across multiple entities

· Review general ledger activity, journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for accuracy and completeness

· Prepare and review property-level, entity-level, and consolidated financial statements in accordance with GAAP

· Provide timely financial reporting packages to ownership, including budget-to-actual analysis, cash flow reporting, and meaningful variance commentary

· Present financial results, risks, discrepancies, and recommendations to ownership and company leadership

· Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with ownership, property managers, and department leaders

· Develop, maintain, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and appropriate segregation of duties

· Oversee cash management, bank reconciliations, cash flow forecasting, and banking relationships

· Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, tenant receivables, rent collections, security deposits, and vendor payment controls

· Review and approve payments, journal entries, account reconciliations, and other financial transactions within assigned authority

· Review intercompany transactions, allocations, and reconciliations across related entities

· Oversee fixed asset accounting, capital improvement tracking, depreciation, and amortization

· Monitor debt obligations, lender reporting requirements, and financial covenant compliance

· Coordinate federal, state, and local tax reporting requirements, including 1099s, sales and use tax, and property tax accruals, in partnership with outside tax professionals

· Lead external audit and review engagements, including preparation of schedules, supporting documentation, and responses to auditor requests

· Maintain the chart of accounts, close calendar, accounting records, and financial reporting standards across the portfolio

· Oversee property accounting activities, including lease terms, rent schedules, CAM charges, concessions, abatements, tenant improvements, and other tenant charges

· Review financial discrepancies and unusual activity, ensure issues are thoroughly researched, and drive timely resolution

· Partner with property managers and corporate staff to strengthen financial accuracy, accountability, and communication

· Identify and implement improvements to accounting processes, reporting, internal controls, workflow automation, and financial systems

· Maintain a professional, courteous, and solutions-oriented attitude when interacting with team members, vendors, and third parties

· Perform all other duties as assigned

Key Qualifications:

· Strong knowledge of GAAP, accrual accounting, general ledger activity, financial statement preparation, and month-end and year-end close processes

· Demonstrated leadership experience managing, developing, and holding an accounting team accountable

· Strong understanding of real estate and property management accounting, including lease accounting and property-level financial reporting

· Demonstrated experience with multi-entity accounting, consolidations, and intercompany transactions

· Ability to analyze financial results, identify trends and discrepancies, and clearly communicate findings to ownership and operational leaders

· Strong experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and variance analysis

· Working knowledge of internal controls, audit coordination, tax reporting, and financial compliance

· Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with ERP or accounting systems required

· Experience with Yardi, AppFolio, MRI, RealPage, or QuickBooks preferred

· Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills with sound judgment

· Strong written and verbal communication skills across departments and levels of leadership

Additional Requirements (Education, Training, and Experience):

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required

· 8+ years of progressive accounting experience required

· 3+ years of accounting leadership or supervisory experience required

· Prior real estate or property management accounting experience strongly preferred

· Experience working in a multi-entity environment strongly preferred

· CPA designation or progress toward certification preferred

Pay: $110,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
