Full Job Description

We are seeking an exceptional nonprofit accounting professional who combines strong technical expertise with a genuine desire to help nonprofit organizations succeed.

This is not an entry-level bookkeeping position. We are looking for an A-player—someone who understands nonprofit accounting at a high level, takes ownership of their work, notices the details others miss, and enjoys using their expertise to help others.

The ideal candidate doesn't simply know how to enter transactions into QuickBooks. They understand why the books are structured the way they are, how financial reporting supports nonprofit leadership, and how the accounting ultimately flows into Form 990 and other year-end reporting.

The Professional We're Looking For

Our ideal candidate has:

At least 5 years of professional accounting or bookkeeping experience
Advanced, hands-on knowledge of QuickBooks
Meaningful experience working specifically with nonprofit organizations
A strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and best practices
Knowledge of how a nonprofit's chart of accounts, financial statements and general ledger integrate with Form 990 reporting
Strong knowledge of functional expense reporting and allocation, including:
Program services
Management and general
Fundraising
Experience with restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, contributions, programs and fund tracking
Experience preparing clean, accurate financial records for year-end reporting, tax preparation and CPA/auditor review
Strong reconciliation, troubleshooting and QuickBooks clean-up skills
The ability to recognize inconsistencies, ask the right questions and resolve issues rather than simply processing what is put in front of them
Excellent attention to detail, organization and follow-through
The ability to work independently while also being a collaborative member of a professional team
Strong communication skills and the ability to explain accounting concepts to people who may not have an accounting background
Professional references who can speak to the quality, reliability and integrity of their work

Position Structure

This is a very part-time, flexible opportunity that may be structured as either:

Part-Time Employment
or
Independent Contractor

The majority of the work can be performed remotely; however, the successful candidate must be based in the Minneapolis–St. Paul metro area and available for occasional in-person meetings, training or client needs.

Compensation

Compensation will be competitive and based on experience, demonstrated expertise, responsibilities and whether the relationship is structured as employment or independent contracting.
