Bar Manager

Location: Springfield, Massachusetts
Industry: Brewpub / Craft Brewery / All-Alcohol Bar
Reports to: General Manager / Ownership

Position Summary

The Bar Manager is responsible for overseeing all alcohol service operations at a Springfield-based brewpub/all-alcohol bar. This role focuses exclusively on bar operations, guest experience, staff leadership, inventory control, and strict compliance with Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC) regulations and local licensing authority requirements. This position does not include food or kitchen management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Bar Operations & Guest Experience

Oversee daily bar and taproom operations, including opening and closing procedures
Ensure high standards of hospitality, speed of service, and bar presentation
Execute and maintain standards for draft beer service, cocktails, and wine offerings
Monitor guest consumption and intervene appropriately to ensure responsible service
Resolve guest concerns professionally and in accordance with company policies

Staff Leadership & Scheduling

Hire, train, supervise, and discipline bartenders and bar support staff
Create and manage staff schedules based on volume, events, and labor targets
Ensure all alcohol-serving staff maintain current TIPS or equivalent certification
Train staff on ID verification, refusal of service, and intoxication management

Inventory & Cost Control

Manage inventory for beer (on-site brewed and guest beer as permitted), wine, spirits, mixers, and bar supplies
Place orders, receive deliveries, and conduct regular inventory counts
Monitor pour costs, waste, and loss prevention
Maintain organized, secure storage and keg handling procedures

ABCC & Local Licensing Compliance

Ensure full compliance with Massachusetts ABCC regulations and Springfield Local Licensing Authority requirements, including:
Prevention of service to minors
Prevention of service to intoxicated persons
Adherence to approved service areas, hours of operation, and floor plans
Compliance with pricing and promotion restrictions
Maintain required alcohol licenses, permits, and postings
Prepare for and assist with ABCC or local licensing inspections and renewals
Document and report all alcohol-related incidents in accordance with company policy

Events & Special Service

Oversee alcohol service for brewery events, tastings, and private functions
Ensure all event service complies with the licensed premises and ABCC rules
Coordinate staffing and bar setup for high-volume or special events

Qualifications

Minimum of 2.5 years of bar or hospitality management experience
Strong knowledge of beer styles, draft systems, cocktails, wine, and spirits
Working knowledge of Massachusetts ABCC laws and local licensing regulations
Proven leadership and team management skills
Experience with POS systems and bar inventory management
Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
Ability to lift and move kegs and cases up to 50 lbs
Ability to work in a fast-paced, guest-facing bar environment
