General Function

The Director of Student Learning Services provides strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and continuous assessment of comprehensive academic support and retention initiatives that advance the University’s student success goals. The Director designs and oversees institution-wide tutoring, writing, and supplemental instruction programs; establishes policies and operational frameworks; and ensures alignment with the University’s strategic plan and retention objectives.

The Director leads cross-campus collaboration with faculty, academic departments, deans, and student success partners to identify emerging academic support needs, develop data-informed interventions, and evaluate program effectiveness. The Director exercises primary responsibility for program direction, resource allocation, staff supervision, and the integration of assessment findings into long-range planning to strengthen student persistence and achievement.

Description of Primary Duties

1. Leads the development and implementation of institution-wide academic support strategies that advance student retention and persistence. Collaborates with faculty, academic departments, and deans to assess academic support needs; designs and implements targeted, data-informed interventions; and evaluates program impact to inform institutional decision-making. Establishes policies and operational standards that support effective tutoring, writing, and supplemental instruction services across the University.

2. Oversees the recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of student employees and graduate assistants. Directs staff development initiatives to ensure effective service delivery and continuous improvement of academic support programs.

3. Analyzes, evaluates, solves, and makes decisions regarding problematic situations.

4. Conducts bi-weekly meetings to review activities and inform Consultants, Leaders, Mentors, and Graduate Assistants of new procedures and issues.

5. Develops and monitors budgets and prioritizes services and purchases based on needs and budgetary limitations.

6. Develops and implements comprehensive assessment plans to evaluate program effectiveness, student outcomes, and service utilization. Modifies program structures and operational procedures based on assessment findings and emerging institutional priorities.

7. Leads the design and refinement of systems and processes that promote effective delivery of student support services and align with the University’s strategic plan. Identifies areas of need, develops program proposals, and directs implementation of initiatives that strengthen institutional retention efforts and academic success outcomes.

8. Coordinates and develops a competent and effective staff of student mentors and tutors by working with academic department heads and deans in recruiting and hiring qualified students, providing orientation and training regarding programs, policies and procedures, making appropriate work assignments, and evaluating performance.

9. Monitors and coordinates with web strategy to ensure the BearCLAW website is effective in reaching students and conveying appropriate information effectively.

10. Manages the electronic tutoring management system by using it to allow faculty to communicate tutoring needs, scheduling and maintaining records of tutors, tutees, and tutoring sessions, and providing information and analysis of information in the database.

11. Investigates grant opportunities and external funding to further goals and objectives for essential programs and assures that grant-funded programs are administered in compliance with University and funding organization policies and procedures.

12. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, participating in professional organizations, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the supervisor.

13. Contributes to the overall success of the Bear CLAW and student success and retention initiatives by preforming all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education: A Master’s degree is required.

Experience: Five years of successful experience working with student success initiatives or teaching writing or study skills at the college level are required. Experience in the development of student tutoring programs or/and a writing center are preferred.

Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Proven leadership and managerial skills are required. The ability to expand writing skills assistance through online methods is preferred.

Additional Qualifications

Familiarity with tutor scheduling systems, assessing academic support programs, and space management.
