Afterschool Activity Specialist

Job Description

Sovereign Care Services Pediatric Therapy Center is a multi-disciplinary team of professionals committed to providing functional and purposeful therapy programming for children 18 months-17 years old and adults 18-21 years old, with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Intellectual/Developmental Disability (IDD) diagnosis.

Summary of Responsibilities

Sovereign Care Services is seeking an Afterschool Activity Specialist in our North Brunswick, NJ program. Under the direction of the Office Manager, the Activity Specialist is responsible for supervising a group of children. The Activity Specialist establishes relationships with children and their parents while providing a safe, pleasant and caring atmosphere during afterschool. Participation in Activities of Daily Living and Leisure activities allows individuals with autism to learn skills specific to a particular activity, these skills can be applied in general settings such as home, school and work.

Duties include:

Engage participants in activities that promotes the development of Activities of Daily Living Skills (ADLs) and Leisure Skills.
Interacting with children in an appropriate manner to ensure their dignity are upheld and provide opportunities to build self-esteem and confidence.
Assist child/youth with self-care needs as necessary which may include (eating, toileting, dressing).
Collaborate with site leadership in the planning, development and execution of quality, project-based youth development activities
Develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with participants, families & members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Provide support through encouragement and delivering resources
Prepare related paperwork, materials and implementation supplies
Timely submit all program and certification related documents
Performs other related duties as assigned
Handles all behavior, and other incidents ensuring the safety of all participants utilizing crisis prevention, recognition, and intervention as needed.
Work closely with the BCBA to Implement Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis
Quarterly staff meeting attendance
Ensure all agency policies are implemented and followed
Complete required training in the designated timeframe

Required Qualifications:

1 year demonstrated experience working with youth with an Intellectual /Developmental Disabilities
High School diploma or equivalent
Must have content specific experience (i.e. ADLs, Leisure skills, Autism, etc)
Ability to plan and carry out assignments independently
Ability to prioritize, adhere to timelines and multi-task
Available between 11 am to 6 pm, Monday-Friday
Weekend availability a plus
Valid CPR/First Aid Certification or willing to complete

All positions require a valid driver’s license in good standing, pre-employment drug screening and background check. All candidates, if hired, will be expected to cooperate with Sovereign Care Services and The Department of Human Services in all inspections and investigations.
