Commercial Low Voltage / Field Service Technician
Pay: $18.00–$27.00 per hour (based on experience, qualifications, certifications, and demonstrated skill level)
Position Overview
This is NOT an entry-level position. Successful candidates must be capable of working independently, making sound technical decisions in the field, and completing service calls with minimal supervision after training.
This is a full-time traveling field position requiring 90–100% regional travel, overnight stays, physically demanding work, and schedule flexibility.
As a Commercial Low Voltage / Field Service Technician, you'll install, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and document commercial low-voltage systems for customers across multiple industries.
What You'll Do
- Install, terminate, certify, label, test, and document Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optic, coaxial, and other low-voltage cabling systems.
- Install, configure, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain:
- CCTV/IP Camera Systems
- Network Video Recorders (NVR/DVR)
- Access Control Systems
- Burglar Alarm Systems
- Commercial Fire Alarm Systems
- Point-of-Sale (POS) Equipment
- Wireless Networking Equipment
- Network Switches, Routers, and Commercial IT Infrastructure
- Telecommunications Systems
- Install, troubleshoot, and repair POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), analog telephone circuits, demarcation equipment, and traditional TelCo infrastructure.
- Install, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and document fiber optic cabling.
- Perform commercial network troubleshooting, including TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, Power over Ethernet (PoE), switch configuration, and basic VLAN verification.
- Build telecommunications rooms, including racks, cabinets, ladder trays, cable pathways, conduit, raceways, sleeves, J-hooks, D-rings, grounding systems, and cable management.
- Perform firestopping of cable penetrations in accordance with applicable codes and company standards.
- Safely operate hand tools and power tools, including hammer drills, rotary hammers, core drills, cable pullers, fish tape, knockout tools, masonry anchors, and specialty installation equipment.
- Capture detailed site photographs and upload required deliverables according to company standards.
- Complete clear, accurate service notes, testing results, customer documentation, and closeout reports.
- Communicate professionally with dispatch, project managers, vendors, customers, and on-site management.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, inventory, and a professional appearance.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of commercial low-voltage field experience.
- Experience installing, terminating, testing, and documenting structured cabling.
- Experience installing and servicing commercial CCTV/IP camera systems.
- Experience installing and servicing commercial access control systems.
- Experience installing and servicing commercial fire alarm systems.
- Hands-on experience with POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), analog telephone circuits, and traditional telecommunications infrastructure is required.
- Experience installing, terminating, testing, or troubleshooting fiber optic cabling.
- Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, riser diagrams, and construction documents.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Working knowledge of TCP/IP networking, DHCP, DNS, PoE, switch configuration, and basic VLAN concepts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass required background investigations and drug screening.
- Willingness to obtain state licensing where required.
Required Technical Skills
Candidates must be proficient using:
- Digital Multimeter (DMM)
- Telephone Butt Set (Buttset)
- Tone Generator and Probe
- Punch-down tools (66/110)
- RJ-45 termination tools
- Hammer drills
- Rotary hammers
- Core drills
- Cable testing equipment
Candidates should also be comfortable with:
- LinkIQ or equivalent cable qualification tester
- Fluke cable certification equipment
- OTDR testing
- Visual Fault Locators (VFL)
- Fiber power meters
Physical Requirements
This is an active field position requiring physical work throughout the day.
Applicants must be able to:
- Routinely work at heights of up to 40 feet.
- Safely operate scissor lifts, boom lifts, ladders, and other aerial work platforms.
- Properly wear and use required fall protection equipment.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull ladders, cable reels, tools, equipment, and installation materials throughout the workday.
- Work in crawl spaces, attics, rooftops, warehouses, retail stores, construction sites, manufacturing facilities, and outdoor environments.
- Drill through concrete, masonry, wood, drywall, steel, and other building materials using commercial installation equipment.
- Work safely in hot, cold, wet, dusty, and changing weather conditions.

- CompTIA A+
- CompTIA Network+
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Fiber certification
- Fusion splicing experience
- OTDR testing experience
- Bosch Security Systems experience

Work Schedule
This is a full-time field position with a schedule driven by customer project requirements.
- Once technicians have completed training and are working independently, typical workdays are 10–12 hours.
- We generally work longer days rather than traditional 8-hour shifts, which often allows for shorter work weeks whenever project schedules permit.
- Standard work week is approximately 45 hours.
- Applicants must be willing and available to work up to approximately 50 hours per week when customer demands or project schedules require.
- Regional travel of 90–100% is required.
- Overnight travel is required.
- Evening, weekend, holiday, and after-hours work may be required based on customer needs.
