Pre-Op / Post-Op Registered Nurse (RN)

The Pre-Op / Post-Op Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care for patients throughout the pre-operative and post-anesthesia recovery phases. Responsibilities include patient assessment, preparation for surgery, recovery monitoring, patient education, discharge planning, and collaboration with physicians, anesthesia providers, and clinical staff to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Operative Nursing Care

Perform pre-operative patient assessments and document findings.
Review medical history, medications, allergies, and diagnostic results.
Verify patient identity, procedure, surgical site, and informed consent.
Initiate IV therapy and administer medications as ordered.
Prepare patients physically and emotionally for surgery.
Provide patient and family education regarding the surgical procedure and recovery process.
Communicate pertinent patient information to the surgical and anesthesia teams.

Post-Anesthesia Recovery (PACU) Care

Monitor patients during Phase I and Phase II recovery.
Assess and document airway status, vital signs, pain levels, neurological status, and surgical site condition.
Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and facility policies.
Collaborate with physicians and anesthesia providers to promote safe recovery.
Ensure discharge criteria are met prior to patient discharge.
Provide post-operative instructions and education to patients and caregivers.

Professional Conduct & Team Collaboration

Support the Center's mission, goals, values, and standards of patient care.
Maintain professional and ethical conduct at all times.
Serve as a positive role model and team member.
Communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers.
Participate in meetings, committees, in-services, and educational activities.
Utilize resources responsibly and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements.

Documentation & Compliance

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the medical record.
Protect patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
Educate patients regarding the Center's Advance Directives policy.
Follow all applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Infection Prevention & Safety

Follow infection prevention and control practices at all times.
Clean and disinfect equipment according to manufacturer instructions and facility policy.
Practice safe medication administration and management.
Utilize standard precautions and appropriate personal protective equipment.
Comply with OSHA, safety, and risk-management policies.
Report hazards, incidents, and adverse events promptly.

Quality Improvement (QAPI)

Participate in quality improvement and performance improvement activities.
Assist with data collection and quality initiatives.
Provide recommendations to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

Professional Development

Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
Share knowledge with colleagues and assist with staff education when appropriate.
Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to cross-train in other clinical areas as needed.

Required Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Missouri.
Current BLS certification.
Strong communication and patient education skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous Pre-Op, PACU, Critical Care, Emergency Department, or Ambulatory Surgery Center experience.
ACLS certification.
PALS certification.
Experience recovering patients receiving moderate sedation.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and critical-thinking skills.

Physical & Mental Requirements

Ability to push, pull, bend, twist, and assist with patient movement and positioning.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies as necessary.
Visual and auditory acuity necessary for patient assessment and monitoring.
Manual dexterity required for clinical procedures and documentation.
Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
