Full Job Description

Maintenance Supervisor

Suburban Carting is seeking an experienced Maintenance Supervisor to lead maintenance operations for our fleet of 70+ trucks, heavy equipment, compactors, and facilities. The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for maximizing fleet uptime, reducing downtime, controlling maintenance costs, and ensuring all equipment is safe, compliant, and ready to support daily operations.

This is a leadership position for a hands-on Maintenance Supervisor who can effectively manage people, equipment, vendors, and priorities in a fast-paced environment. The successful Maintenance Supervisor will lead a team of 10-15 mechanics, welders, and shop personnel while maintaining high standards for safety, productivity, accountability, and workmanship.

As a Maintenance Supervisor, you will play a critical role in supporting customer service, operational performance, and the professional image of our company.

Key Responsibilities

Manage all preventive maintenance and repair activities for refuse trucks, roll-off trucks, containers, compactors, heavy equipment, and company facilities.
Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of mechanics, welders, and shop personnel.
Assign and prioritize daily work orders, repairs, PM services, and shop projects to maximize fleet availability and minimize downtime.
Maintain accurate reporting on fleet status, including out-of-service vehicles, repair progress, parts availability, corrective actions, and estimated return-to-service dates.
Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules to improve reliability and reduce costly breakdowns.
Plan and coordinate major repairs, rebuilds, and projects requiring extended downtime.
Purchase parts, tools, and supplies while maintaining cost controls and inventory oversight.
Build and maintain strong relationships with parts vendors, equipment suppliers, and outside repair facilities.
Negotiate pricing and identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
Coordinate emergency roadside repairs and after-hours breakdown support when necessary.
Schedule and oversee installation, service, and repair of compactors at customer locations.
Procure new equipment based on route and operational requirements and coordinate disposal of obsolete equipment through sale or scrap.
Track warranties and ensure all eligible warranty claims are pursued.
Monitor maintenance expenses, fuel usage, repair trends, and equipment lifecycle costs.
Review and audit DOT-required documentation, including inspection reports, work orders, maintenance records, and vehicle condition reports (VCRs).
Ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, EPA, and company maintenance standards.
Recruit, hire, train, coach, and develop maintenance personnel.
Approve employee schedules and PTO requests while maintaining appropriate staffing levels.
Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Communicate recurring equipment and safety concerns to the Safety Manager.
Coordinate contracted facility services, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, landscaping, cleaning, and pest control.
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional shop environment.

QualificationsRequired

Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience managing mechanics, welders, and maintenance personnel.
Experience leading a maintenance team of 10-15 employees.
Experience managing a fleet of 50+ heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
Strong diesel, hydraulic, electrical, brake, suspension, welding, and heavy equipment maintenance knowledge.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.
Strong attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to follow up, follow through, and hold others accountable.
Experience managing maintenance budgets, repair costs, vendors, and parts procurement.
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Valid driver's license required.
CDL preferred.

Preferred

Experience with Mack, Peterbilt, McNeilus, EZ Pack, and Allison Transmission equipment.
Experience in the waste and recycling, transportation, construction, or heavy equipment industries.
Familiarity with Dossier Fleet Maintenance, Tech Tool, Davie 4, Navistar Diagnostics, Bendix, and Wabco systems.
OSHA safety and regulatory compliance experience.
Fleet management, engineering, diesel technology, or related technical background.
