Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) is a key member of the perioperative team responsible for providing direct technical support to surgeons, registered nurses, and anesthesia providers before, during, and after surgical procedures. The CST functions as the scrub person and is responsible for maintaining a sterile field, anticipating the needs of the surgical team, and ensuring the availability and proper handling of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. The Certified Surgical Technician promotes patient safety, procedural efficiency, and compliance with all regulatory and hospital standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or equivalent nationally recognized credentialing body.
Certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
Completion of annual continuing education units (CEUs) required to maintain certification and in accordance with hospital policy.
Minimum one (1) year of operating room experience preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of surgical instrumentation, sterile technique, infection prevention, and perioperative practices.
Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity surgical environment.
Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prepares operating rooms for surgical procedures by assembling instruments, equipment, supplies, implants, and specialty items required for the scheduled procedure.
Performs surgical hand scrubbing, gowning, and gloving in accordance with established aseptic principles.
Establishes, maintains, and monitors the sterile field throughout all surgical procedures.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and surgical team by selecting and passing instruments, sutures, sponges, medications, and supplies in a timely manner.
Demonstrates competency in surgical procedures across multiple specialties and adapts to the unique requirements of each service line.
Assists with patient positioning, preparation, and draping while maintaining patient safety and dignity.
Performs sponge, sharps, needle, and instrument counts with the Registered Nurse according to hospital policy.
Maintains accountability for all instruments, supplies, and equipment utilized during surgical procedures.
Handles surgical specimens according to hospital policy and surgeon instructions, ensuring proper identification and transport.
Identifies and immediately reports breaks in sterile technique, equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, or unusual occurrences to the Registered Nurse and surgical team.
Assists in emergency, trauma, and urgent surgical procedures requiring rapid room setup and preparation.
Demonstrates proficiency in the use and handling of specialty surgical equipment, instrumentation, and technology.
Assists in maintaining adequate inventory of instruments and supplies and reports shortages or equipment concerns.
Participates in operating room turnover activities to ensure efficient patient flow and operating room utilization.
Assists in orienting and supporting newly hired Surgical Technicians, students, and other perioperative personnel as assigned.
Maintains current knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and emerging technologies through continuing education and professional development.
Adheres to all infection prevention standards, universal precautions, and safety regulations.
Collaborates effectively with surgeons, Registered Nurses, anesthesia providers, sterile processing personnel, and other healthcare professionals to promote positive patient outcomes.
Supports departmental quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and regulatory compliance activities.
Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct in all interactions with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers.
Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures, rules, and regulations, including attendance requirements, ETIME procedures, dress code standards, cellular telephone usage policies, and rules of conduct.
Provides excellent customer service and promotes a respectful, collaborative work environment.
Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of practice of a Certified Surgical Technician.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for prolonged periods during surgical procedures.
Ability to lift, push, pull, and transport equipment and supplies consistent with departmental requirements.
Ability to wear surgical attire and personal protective equipment for extended periods.
Ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergency situations.

Performance Expectations

Maintains active certification and completes all required annual CEUs.

Functions as a dependable and collaborative member of the perioperative team.
