Senior Design Manager – A/E Services

Lead the Design of Safe, Resilient Schools Across Los Angeles

Project Support Services (PSS) is seeking an experienced Senior Design Manager – A/E Services to support the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Facilities Services Division.

This position leads multiple facilities design projects, with particular emphasis on seismic, critical repair, retrofit, and engineering repair work. The Senior Design Manager directs the design review process and helps ensure that plans meet functional program, budgetary, environmental, legal, educational, and building standards requirements.

Working with architects, engineers, consultants, District administrators, and other project stakeholders, the Senior Design Manager provides clear direction on project goals, standards, sites, schedules, and budgets while guiding projects toward timely completion.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished design and capital projects leader with extensive experience in facilities design, planning, contract administration, cost estimating, scheduling, and team supervision. Experience with educational facilities or similar public agencies is essential.

What You’ll Do

Manage multiple facilities projects, with particular emphasis on seismic, critical repair, retrofit, and engineering repair projects.
Manage and supervise design professionals and other project team members throughout the design review process.
Lead, develop, and coordinate the District’s A/E services design process to keep plans aligned with functional program, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
Coordinate with architects, consultants, and District personnel to support the timely completion of engineering repair, critical repair, and other assigned projects.
Oversee the building design process and work with design professionals and District administrators to ensure new and modernized facilities meet educational and building standards.
Establish and follow a qualifications-based process for identifying and selecting the architectural firm best suited to each project and its performance requirements.
Provide architects with clear, consistent direction regarding project goals and objectives, standards, sites, schedules, and budgets.
Establish and maintain an effective design review process that ensures each design supports the project’s overall goals and objectives.
Promote maximum value for budgeted funds while ensuring designs are appropriate, durable, and responsive to the needs of the District, local community, and environment.
Review proposed design changes and recommend appropriate action to keep projects within budget.
Monitor project planning and design status and communicate findings, recommendations, risks, and updates to stakeholders.
Support contract administration, cost estimating, scheduling, and coordination activities across assigned capital projects.
Resolve design issues, align multidisciplinary teams, and help maintain project scope, quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of 14 years of full-time, paid professional experience managing facilities design or planning and coordinating capital projects, including overall design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling activities.
At least four years of this experience must involve the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or work for similar public agencies.
Bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering from a recognized college or university.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear direction and present recommendations to diverse stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to lead design professionals, consultants, and multidisciplinary project teams.
Ability to manage multiple complex projects, priorities, schedules, and budgets in a public-sector environment.
Strong judgment, organization, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Architect and engineering consultant selection and management
Design review, standards compliance, and constructability coordination

Managing design changes, project risks, and stakeholder expectations
A master’s degree in architecture or engineering
A valid California Architect registration or Professional Engineer license
