About Tyr Laboratories

Tyr Laboratories is a defense technology company in Austin, Texas, with in-house engineering, production, and testing. This role owns the electrical and avionics design at the core of our hardware.

About the Role

The Electrical / Avionics Engineer designs electronics and the architecture technicians build to, and owns bring-up and integration through test.

Responsibilities

Produce schematic, board, and wiring designs
Fabricate wiring and harnesses hands-on — crimp, solder, and terminate
Define power architecture and the harness architecture technicians build to
Integrate sensors and buses
Perform board bring-up and manage EMI hygiene
Write assembly and build documentation for technicians
Collaborate with the other engineering teams and technicians across disciplines
Coordinate with outside vendors to order boards and components
Provide bench and field-test support
Own the hardware–software boundary in coordination with the software lead

Qualifications

Demonstrated electrical or avionics design, debug, and bring-up work — portfolio and real work over credentials
Experience designing embedded, electromechanical systems. Robotics, drones, RC, automotive/motorsports electronics, embedded projects, or military/aerospace systems work all apply
Hands-on wiring competence — crimping, soldering, and harness fabrication
Fluency with the protocols these systems run on — CAN, I2C, serial/UART, SBUS, Ethernet/IP
RF knowledge, including antenna placement, is a strong plus
Switching and power electronics knowledge or experience a plus
Ability to document designs so technicians can build from them
Works well in a multidisciplinary team — clear communication with engineers, technicians, and vendors
No degree or minimum years of experience required — we hire for demonstrated capability. Aerospace, RF, or flight-critical experience is valued at the top of the range.

Field-test support: this role supports field testing — travel up to approximately 30% when scheduled, a motor-vehicle-record check, and a company-paid FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate. Prior flight-test experience is not required.

Compensation & Schedule

$75,000–$140,000 per year. Full-time or part-time. On-site in North Austin, with field-test travel.

Equity: stock options under the company's equity incentive plan.

15 days paid time off · 12 paid holidays · workers' compensation coverage. This role is overtime-eligible.
