Victory Autism Academy- Occupational Therapist (COTA)

Position Title: Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA)

Supervisor: Principal

Term of Employment: 1 0 months

Job Summary: Deliver Occupational Therapy services in the educational setting on behalf of students who are limited by physical impairments or illness, psychosocial dysfunction, developmental or learning difficulties, socioeconomic and cultural differences in order to achieve optimum functional performance, maximize independence, prevent disability, and maintain health; to include evaluation, treatment, environmental modification, consultation, training, and program monitoring.

Essential Functions: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include, but are not limited to, the following tasks, duties, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by the Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities generally include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

COTA will work with kindergarten- 12th grade students.
COTA will join a team where the vision is to push into the classroom and community while delivering services in their natural environment when appropriate.
Collaborates with classroom teachers to schedule interventions using a variety of service delivery models such as classroom intervention, consultation/collaboration, and pull-out as appropriate to meet students’ needs in the least restrictive environment.
Provides activities commensurate with students’ interests and aptitudes.
Uses a variety of equipment, materials, devices, and aids.
Uses systematic and evidence-based intervention strategies to foster OT services.
Implements the service of delivery model most appropriate to the students’ degree of severity.
Provides feedback and reinforcement to students.
Skill and experience working with students who use augmentative and adaptive communication strategies and devices.
Create lesson plans and facilitate individual and/or group therapy activities to target IEP goals, using curriculum-based materials and content whenever possible.
Assist with data collection and progress monitoring activities.
Schedule and organize for a caseload of students under the supervision of a certified OT.
Assist the OT with clerical tasks.
Review and maintain OT files and related paperwork.
Support classroom curriculum as it relates to OT skills.
Gives written information to teachers, parents, and others on ways to foster OT services.
Coach classroom staff on implementation of OT goals.
Talks with teachers formally and informally about individual student’s needs and progress.
Attend parent conferences, IEP meetings, with the permission from the supervising OT, and written documentation from the OT. No interpretation of data and/or change in treatment plan can be done without the OT’s input.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of disabling conditions that occur before and after birth and their effects on students with special needs related to educational performance.
Knowledge of the educational system and its critical components including federal and state regulations and ethical/legal responsibilities applying to occupational therapists in the educational setting.
Knowledge of major theories, treatment procedures, and research relevant to providing occupational therapy services for children (3-22) with disabilities.
Evidence of continuing education efforts to enhance skills, expertise, and professional knowledge as it relates to job performance. This could include such areas as adaptive equipment and assistive technology, training and supervision of other staff, administration, time management, and evidence-based interventions.
Knowledge of Victory Autism Academy policies and procedures.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public, and others having business with Victory Autism Academy.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

Minimum Qualifications: Must have graduated from an accredited university with a degree in Occupational Therapy and hold a current license from the Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners.

Other Requirements:

Must be able to pass a fingerprint and background clearance check.
Must be able to obtain and maintain an Arizona driver’s license.
May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
May be required to lift students weighing up to 60 pounds.
May be required to work outside normal working hours.
May be required to travel to perform work functions.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract
