Full Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE

Jill's Office is a virtual receptionist and communications company answering calls for thousands of small businesses across the US. We run a working blend of humans and AI handling the real, messy reality of customer communication — calls, routing, automation, integrations, AI phone answering, and the internal operational tooling that holds it all together.

We're looking for a senior backend engineer to help modernize and scale what we've built, raise the bar on security and reliability, and lead technical decisions across the platform. This is not a narrow maintenance role. We want someone with opinions and the ownership to act on them.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Drive backend architecture and technical decision-making across the platform
Modernize and improve existing systems — and do it without breaking production
Bring our infrastructure and applications in line with modern security best practices
Design and maintain scalable APIs and backend services the rest of the company builds on
Partner directly with heads of other departments to identify the improvements and features that actually matter
Improve reliability, observability, deployment processes, and developer workflows
Help shape engineering standards and long-term technical direction
Own projects end to end, from planning through deploy

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

5+ years building and maintaining backend systems
Strong experience with TypeScript and Node.js
Experience designing scalable backend architecture and REST/GraphQL APIs
Strong understanding of AWS infrastructure and cloud best practices
Track record of improving legacy systems and upgrading production safely
Familiarity with security best practices and operational reliability
Comfortable making technical decisions and leading projects independently
Motivated, proactive, and product-minded

NICE TO HAVE

Experience with telephony or Twilio
Hands-on experience with Prisma or GraphQL
Background working in small, fast-moving teams
Instinct for identifying product opportunities, not just executing tickets
