Embedded Software Engineer, RF and FPGA Systems
Austin, TX
$90,000 to $130,000 per year

This employer is a global manufacturer of rugged embedded computing, RF, FPGA, and digital signal processing (DSP) systems used in defense, aerospace, and scientific research applications. The RF and DSP engineering team develops embedded hardware and software for mission critical systems deployed worldwide, and this role sits within that team working alongside hardware, firmware, and systems engineers.

Schedule
Full time, direct hire position based in Austin, TX. Travel is minimal.

Compensation
$90,000 to $130,000 per year, based on experience.

What You'll Do
As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will write and enhance embedded software in C, troubleshoot complex firmware issues, and improve product reliability across a family of rugged, defense and aerospace grade embedded systems. You will develop automated test solutions to support product quality, and work closely with FPGA, hardware, and systems engineers to investigate technical problems spanning software and hardware. Responsibilities span the full product lifecycle, including new product development, product improvements, and sustaining engineering on fielded systems. This position offers direct exposure to embedded software, FPGA technologies, digital signal processing, hardware debugging, and automated test development.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience
3+ years of embedded software development experience using C, writing efficient, reliable, and maintainable code
Hands on experience debugging embedded systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators
Proven ability to troubleshoot complex software and hardware interactions in embedded environments
Solid understanding of embedded system architecture and how software interfaces with hardware
Experience developing embedded software for microcontroller or processor based systems
Strong debugging and root cause analysis skills, with the ability to solve complex technical problems independently
Experience working across the full product lifecycle, including new product development, product improvements, and sustaining engineering
Must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder (visa sponsorship is not available for this role)

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Board Support Packages (BSPs) and low level device driver development
Embedded Linux or Yocto/PetaLinux development experience
Understanding of FPGA architecture and experience working alongside FPGA engineers
Experience with AMD/Xilinx development environments
Python scripting for automation or test development
Experience with Git, continuous integration, and modern software development workflows
Familiarity with TestStand, LabVIEW, Bash, Tcl, or Expect
Automated test software or engineering validation test development experience
Experience interpreting PCB layouts and reviewing electrical schematics
Experience with RTOS based embedded systems
Exposure to RF, DSP, data acquisition, or high speed digital systems
Experience in defense, aerospace, telecommunications, robotics, industrial automation, semiconductor equipment, or medical device industries
Customer facing technical support experience
Interest in learning multiple product families and expanding into adjacent engineering disciplines
