What You'll Be Doing in the role of Research Grants Manager
The Research Grants Manager is a member of the Applied Research & Evaluation (ARE) team within Komen’s Mission division. The ARE team supports Komen’s role as an evidence-based organization by transforming data into meaningful intelligence that will guide program strategy, convey Komen’s research impact and contribute to the body of scientific evidence about breast cancer to fuel scientific discoveries and improve breast cancer outcomes for all. The primary objectives of the Research Grants Manager are to provide scientific expertise through management of assigned research grants that make up the grant portfolio; manage the research grant process from application and peer review to contracting and grant initiation to post-award management of the funded award; support grantee engagement efforts to foster relationships with our past and presently funded researchers; assess the outcomes and impact of Komen’s research portfolio, and support communications efforts to illustrate Komen’s impact in research funding.
What You Will Bring to the Table
- Under the direction of leadership, applies scientific expertise and manages all facets of Komen's research grants program from application and peer review to contracting and grant initiation to post-award management of the funded awards.
- Provides scientific expertise and management of the development of requests for applications and supports peer review of research grant applications, including developing administrative timelines, selecting expert and advocate reviewers, conducting eligibility reviews, facilitating scientific discussions, ensuring adherence to review criteria, providing review feedback to applicants, etc.
- Participates in grants initiation processes, ensuring timely communication of requirements to grant applicants and institutions, reviews potential funding overlaps, assurances and compliance documentation, and other matters necessary to proceed to contracting.
- Manages active grants and monitors progress by reviewing scientific and financial reports, reviews change requests, approves/denies grant payments, oversees grant closeout processes and escalates issues to leadership.
- Enters grant information, outputs, and outcomes into a variety of tracking sheets and databases to ensure accurate and thorough record-keeping and facilitate reporting on and evaluation of Komen-funded research grants and their impact.
- Assists with research portfolio data management and classification activities, including maintaining project databases, categorizing grants using established classification systems, validating data, and helping ensure constancy and accuracy of research program records.
- Supports evaluation of Komen-funded research programs and portfolio impact by collecting, organizing, and analyzing grant, survey and program data; tracking measurable outcomes; and assisting with portfolio analyses and impact reporting.
- Supports grantee engagement efforts to foster relationships with our past and presently funded researchers by conducting welcome calls with new Komen-funded researchers in assigned portfolio; communicating regularly with each grantee throughout the duration of their funded research grant, including meeting with researchers at scientific conferences as applicable; and develops and conducts grantee engagement activities, sessions and events, as assigned.
- Supports communications effort identifying key research topics and Komen funded researchers to illustrate the impact of Komen's Mission investments with a focus on research, provides lay friendly descriptions of funded research and concepts, and participates in webinars, presentations, interviews, other opportunities as needed.
- Supports new and ongoing revenue opportunities and relationships by providing content/subject matter expertise as requested from the Development and Communications team.
- Keeps current and is fully knowledgeable of other scientific organizations' funding procedures and developing trends in research funding.
- Identifies opportunities for improving processes, policies, grantee relations, and partnership opportunities.
- Upholds Komen’s principles of scientific excellence, fairness and transparency in all aspects of the grant application, review and management process.
- Promotes an organizational culture that values trust, commitment to the mission, scientific integrity, and professional and organizational growth.
We Already Know You Will Also Have
- Doctoral Degree in cancer biology or other biomedical science degree.
- 2-5 years of postdoctoral fellowship experience and publication history in breast cancer research.
- Understanding of the research funding landscape, grant application and peer review processes, and grants management concepts.
- Experience conducting evaluation, data collection techniques, and data analysis
- Excellent organizational and project management skills required to manage a large, complex workflow with multiple deadlines, data points, and priorities.
- Exceptional writing and speaking skills required, with ability to communicate scientific concepts to a lay audience (internal and external).
- Shows positive approach to work, flexibility, cultural awareness, sensitivity to relationships, security, and confidentiality.
- Must have excellent and instinctive service and customer relationship skills.
- Ability to travel up to 25%

Approximate salary $60,000 to $77,000, exact compensation ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job level, internal equity and budget.
