Job Description
The Landman / Land Analyst is responsible for acquiring, managing, stewarding, and protecting surface and subsurface rights throughout the asset lifecycle. This role supports asset development, risk mitigation, and value creation through title verification, contract management, ownership research, commercial negotiations, and strategic land administration activities.
The position requires strong expertise in title analysis, lease and easement management, ownership verification, commercial agreements, and land systems. The successful candidate will work cross-functionally with legal, operations, business development, and external stakeholders while ensuring the accuracy of land records and ownership interests.
Responsibilities
Land Administration & Ownership Verification
- Review internal land records and public records to verify ownership interests, leasehold rights, royalties, overriding royalties, and mineral interests.
- Conduct title research and ownership analysis using courthouse records, online databases, and company systems.
- Confirm production status and held-by-production (HBP) status of leases, farmouts, overriding royalty interests, and related agreements.
- Review and validate exhibit-level ownership data for accuracy and completeness.
- Identify title defects, ownership discrepancies, and curative requirements.
- Coordinate title correction efforts and support title curative activities.
Contract & Agreement Management
- Develop, negotiate, and administer land agreements including leases, rights-of-way, easements, surface use agreements, and related contracts.
- Analyze and manage existing contracts to ensure compliance with contractual obligations.
- Track contractual commitments, obligations, expirations, and opportunities.
- Support acquisitions, divestitures, trades, and monetization efforts involving land and mineral assets.
- Negotiate amendments, extensions, and other commercial agreements as required.
Commercial & Strategic Support
- Evaluate business opportunities involving surface and subsurface rights.
- Support development and implementation of land strategies that maximize asset value and reduce risk.
- Assist in structuring commercial transactions and land-related business opportunities.
- Provide recommendations regarding acquisitions, divestitures, and asset management decisions.
- Support due diligence activities for acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures.
Stakeholder & Relationship Management
- Build and maintain relationships with landowners, government agencies, partners, service providers, and internal stakeholders.
- Coordinate activities with field and contract land personnel.
- Support dispute resolution, claims management, and negotiation efforts.
- Provide litigation support and documentation as required.
Data Management & Reporting
- Maintain accurate land records and ownership databases.
- Prepare reports, ownership summaries, title opinions, and land status updates.
- Ensure data integrity within land management systems and databases.
- Monitor and report risks associated with ownership, title, and contractual obligations.
Skills & Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Energy Management, Petroleum Land Management, Business, Legal Studies, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent industry experience may be considered.
- Experience in oil and gas land administration, title research, ownership analysis, or land management.
- Strong understanding of mineral ownership, leasehold interests, royalties, overriding royalties, and title principles.
