Mechanical Engineering Intern – Robotics / Electromechanical Systems

Location: Plano, TX (In Person)
Company: Mentalix, Inc.

Mentalix, Inc., a Texas-based biometrics solutions company, is seeking a motivated and hands-on Mechanical Engineering Intern to assist with the development, support, testing, documentation, and reliability improvement of proprietary robotic document feeder systems used in high-volume fingerprint and document scanning environments.

This is not a “desk-only” internship. The ideal candidate enjoys building, troubleshooting, prototyping, improving mechanical systems, and working directly with real hardware. You will work closely with experienced engineering staff on electromechanical systems involving motion control, sensors, motors, 3D printed components, and automated handling systems.

This position is part-time with flexible scheduling and has the potential to expand into a longer-term or full-time engineering role depending on company needs and candidate performance.

Responsibilities:

Assist with assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and support of robotic document feeder systems
Help analyze recurring field failures and reliability issues
Support redesign and upgrade efforts for existing deployed systems
Assist with design documentation, revision tracking, and engineering organization
Work with stepper motors, sensors, motion systems, Arduino-based controls, and related electromechanical hardware
Use CAD and 3D printing tools to prototype and evaluate mechanical components
Help improve manufacturability, serviceability, and long-term reliability of existing designs
Participate in operational testing and system validation
Manage personal schedule and regularly report activity progress
Work closely with engineering staff in a small-team environment with high visibility and ownership
Develop cross-functional skills to assist with related technical and operational tasks as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

Pursuing or recently completed degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or related technical field
Hands-on experience with mechanical systems, robotics, fabrication, prototyping, or electromechanical systems
Experience with CAD software and/or 3D printing
Familiarity with Arduino or embedded control systems is desirable
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of tasks
Strong communication and organizational skills
Resourceful, dependable, detail-oriented, and highly organized
Ability to collaborate effectively in a small business environment
Interest in automation, robotics, motion systems, or reliability engineering

Additional Requirements:

Must be able to reliably commute to Plano, TX
Must pass a fingerprint-based national criminal background check
Strong verbal communication skills and clear English speaking ability
