POSITION SUMMARY
MCG is seeking a hard-working Construction Management or Civil Engineering student to support estimating, preconstruction, project management, and field operations for concrete, earthwork, and underground utility projects. This role provides hands-on exposure to the full project lifecycle—from bid review and estimating through field execution, cost/change management, and closeout—with increasing responsibility based on performance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Estimating & Preconstruction
· Review drawings, specifications, bid documents, and addenda; perform and verify takeoffs for concrete (foundations, slabs/paving, sidewalks, curb/gutter, ADA ramps and site concrete), earthwork/grading, and storm, water, and sanitary sewer utilities.
· Assist with complete estimates covering labor, materials, equipment, trucking, subcontractors, production rates, indirect costs, overhead, and markup.
· Assist in estimating by attending pre-bid meetings, visiting sites to document and measure existing conditions, and coordinating site visits with clients, owners, and general contractors.
· Solicit supplier/subcontractor pricing, prepare bid comparisons, identify scope gaps and constructability risks, and assist with scopes, inclusions/exclusions, clarifications, proposals, and bid reviews.
· Maintain organized bid files, bid logs, pricing history, and supplier/subcontractor information.
Project Engineering & Project Management
· Support project startup and track RFIs, submittals, change orders, purchase orders, subcontracts, procurement, schedules, and cost reports.
· Assist with drawing/specification review, quantity and cost tracking, budget performance, and change-order documentation and pricing.
· Coordinate with project managers, field teams, subcontractors, and suppliers; maintain project files and support punch list and closeout.
Field Operations
· Visit DFW-area project sites to verify quantities and completed work, document progress, and compare field conditions with project requirements.
· Assist with daily reports, photos, material coordination, safety/quality documentation, and identification of RFIs, changes, and constructability issues.
· Observe construction sequencing, manpower, equipment utilization, and production rates to develop practical field and operations knowledge.
Business & Operational Development
· Support subcontractor/supplier databases, bid-opportunity research, project leads, and bid invitations.
· Help develop standardized estimating/project-management templates, improve workflows, maintain MCG digital systems, and implement estimating, project-management, and document-control tools.
· Gain exposure to the full construction business lifecycle—from business development and estimating through project execution and closeout.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field.
· Strong interest in commercial/civil construction and willingness to work in both office and field environments.
· Ability to read construction drawings or demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
· Strong Microsoft Excel/Office skills, organization, attention to detail, and written/verbal communication.
· Self-motivated, dependable, and able to manage multiple assignments with limited supervision after receiving direction.
· Must be located in or near the Dallas–Fort Worth area and able to travel locally to project sites as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Previous construction internship, co-op, field, estimating, or project-management experience.
· Experience or coursework in concrete, earthwork, underground utilities, civil/site development, or quantity takeoffs.
· Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu, Procore, PlanSwift/OST, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, Primavera P6/MS Project, Agtek or HCSS HeavyBid is a plus.
· Candidates with prior U.S. or international construction experience are encouraged to apply.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are looking for someone who wants broader exposure than a traditional internship and is interested in learning the complete construction process: Bid Opportunity → Estimating → Proposal → Contract Award → Project Startup → Field Execution → Cost & Change Management → Closeout. The role is intended to develop skills across estimating, project engineering, field operations, and project management.
SCHEDULE & WORK LOCATION
· Internship or Co-op structure based on the candidate's academic program and availability.
· Preference for candidates who can commit to a meaningful term and potentially continue across multiple semesters when mutually beneficial.
· Hybrid office/field role in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex; limited remote work may be available depending on assignments.
