D365 F&O Inventory & Costing Systems Consultant
ABOUT CFO’S DOMAIN:
CFO’s Domain is a national accounting, finance, and finance systems consulting and recruiting organization serving CFOs and their stakeholders. Our consultants are experienced practitioners who support clients through mission-critical deliverables, periods of transformation, capacity constraints, and complex finance/accounting initiatives. Consultants receive competitive compensation, benefits, access to CFO’s Domain’s broader recruiting network, and exposure to roles that support continued professional growth.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Our client is seeking a senior-level D365 Finance & Operations (F&O) systems specialist for a 3-to-6-month full-time consulting engagement. This is a hands-on, configuration-level role centered on the Cost Management and Inventory Management modules: how they are set up, how the costing engine calculates and posts, and how inventory and production transactions flow through the F&O data model into the general ledger. The client is specifically looking for a D365 systems expert first, rather than an accountant who also uses the system.
The consultant will operate as the technical subject-matter expert on the F&O costing and inventory stack: item model groups and costing methods, costing versions, costing sheets and indirect cost calculation, item groups and inventory posting profiles, production control parameters, and the inventory close, recalculation, and settlement processes that turn inventory and production events into subledger and GL postings. They will trace transactions through the underlying tables and data entities, reproduce and explain exactly how the system arrives at a given cost or posting, and pinpoint where configuration, master data, or integration is driving unexpected results. Strong cost accounting fluency is expected, but primarily as the frame of reference for validating that the system is configured and behaving correctly.
This is a highly visible, cross-functional role partnering with Finance, Accounting, Operations, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and IT/Systems stakeholders, with particular focus on how production execution and integrated operational systems feed Dynamics 365. The engagement is expected to be full-time, with some onsite presence preferred depending on business needs. Partial hybrid flexibility may be considered.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as the hands-on D365 F&O systems subject matter expert for the Inventory Management, Cost Management, and Production Control modules, including configuration, master data, and posting setup.
- Map and troubleshoot the end-to-end costing engine, including item model groups and costing methods, costing versions, costing sheets, cost groups, and indirect cost (surcharge/rate) calculation, and explain precisely how the system derives item and production costs.
- Trace material, labor, and overhead through work-in-process, finished goods, and cost of goods sold within the F&O data model (inventory transactions, settlements, and production postings) by item, work order, production order, and voucher.
- Diagnose how production order lifecycle events (start, report-as-finished, end) post to WIP, finished goods, inventory valuation, and cost recognition, and identify the configuration or sequencing causes of incorrect postings.
- Validate item and item-group setup, inventory posting profiles, ledger integration, and cost accounting configuration, and document how each setting drives financial impact.
- Investigate physical versus financial update behavior, and analyze inventory close, recalculation, and settlement results to explain the resulting inventory valuation and COGS outcomes.
- Reconcile the inventory subledger to the general ledger using F&O inventory value reporting and voucher-level detail, and isolate the specific transactions or configuration behind any variance.
- Analyze how integrated production/MES and other operational systems feed D365 (via data entities, the Data Management Framework, dual-write, or custom integrations) and how that inbound data affects inventory and cost records.
- Build, extend, and validate reporting against the F&O data model using SQL and Power BI (e.g., entity store, BYOD, or data lake sources) to expose inventory transactions, cost detail, variances, and reconciliation status.
- Perform detailed transactional and root-cause investigation across configuration, master data, integration, and posting logic to explain costing, inventory, or reporting discrepancies.
- Document findings and configuration recommendations clearly and concisely: root cause, system behavior, accounting impact, and recommended corrective setup or process change.
- Provide senior-level technical guidance to Finance, Accounting, Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and IT stakeholders on F&O costing and inventory configuration, data flows, and reporting.
- Recommend and support configuration and process improvements that strengthen the reliability of inventory valuation, cost posting, and subledger-to-GL reconciliation within D365.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Deep, hands-on, configuration-level expertise in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (F&O) / Supply Chain Management, specifically the Cost Management, Inventory Management, and Production Control modules. This is the core requirement of the role.
- Experience must be with D365 Finance & Operations / Supply Chain Management (formerly Dynamics AX).
- Demonstrated command of the F&O costing engine: item model groups and costing methods, costing versions, costing sheets, cost groups, indirect cost calculation, and standard versus actual costing behavior.
- Strong knowledge of F&O item and item-group setup, inventory posting profiles, ledger integration and posting setup, and production control parameters, and how each drives general ledger impact.
- Working understanding of the F&O inventory and production data model and transaction tables (inventory transactions, settlements, and production postings), with the ability to trace costs by item, work order, production order, and voucher.
- Hands-on experience with inventory close, recalculation, and settlement, and with physical versus financial update behavior.
- Experience reconciling the inventory subledger to the general ledger and investigating variances between operational and financial data within F&O.
- SQL and Power BI reporting against F&O data sources (entity store, BYOD, Dataverse, or data lake) strongly preferred.
- Experience integrating F&O with production/MES or other operational systems (data entities, the Data Management Framework, dual-write, or custom integration) preferred.
- A solid cost accounting foundation covering manufacturing cost flows across raw materials, labor, overhead, WIP, finished goods, valuation, and COGS, sufficient to validate that system configuration produces correct financial results.
- Ability to perform detailed technical and transactional root-cause analysis and clearly articulate findings to both technical and finance/accounting stakeholders.
- Senior-level consulting presence with the ability to guide teams through complex F&O configuration, costing, integration, and reconciliation issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent hands-on D365 F&O experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 8+ years across ERP and finance systems, with substantial hands-on time configuring and supporting D365 F&O (or AX) cost and inventory functionality.
- Prior experience in manufacturing, production, distribution, or other inventory-intensive environments preferred.
- Availability to support a 3-to-6-month full-time consulting engagement.
