The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) is a cabinet-level agency with a Secretary appointed by the Governor. KDWP dates back to 1905 when fish and game laws were first organized under the Kansas Fish and Game Department and a new state law required a license to hunt. Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

This unclassified, full-time position is responsible for directing the Human Resources component for the agency. The position will be located in the Office of the Secretary in Topeka, Kansas.

The Director of Human Resources manages the personnel functions of the agency including work in: classifications, position management, payroll, employee relations, compensation, discipline, performance management process, position descriptions, benefits, time and leave, budget, recruitment, retirement, disability, drug testing, FMLA administration, FLSA and child labor law counseling, surveys, personnel actions and advising the Secretary and agency management regarding all aspects of human resource management. The Director of Human Resources serves on the agency management team.

The agency has a geographically diverse workforce that is scattered across the State of Kansas. This position will require travel across the state to participate in new employee orientation, meet with supervisors and employees on personnel actions, participate in management meetings, and perform other duties requiring in person contact.

Minimum Qualifications:

Five years of experience in planning, directing, organizing, managing or administering personnel or human resources functions. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Candidates must be able to pass both SHARP and SMART training to obtain security sign-ons.
A successful candidate must pass a background check and must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Additional Qualifications:

A successful applicant must possess the ability to communicate effectively with others, have very strong customer service skills, possess sound decision-making skills, have a strong work ethic and be able to listen openly.
A successful applicant must have a good working knowledge of computer spreadsheets and Microsoft Office programs. Applicants having experience with the SHARP system is preferred.
A successful applicant must be innovative and a resourceful self-starter able to work with minimal supervision and demonstrate organizational skills, must have a high regard for maintaining confidentiality and must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with applicants, employees and agency staff.
