Full Job Description

**This is a FULL-TIME, CONTRACTUAL C2 position**

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is seeking a Junior Research Medical Physicist o join the School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology.

SCOPE OF ROLE

Accomplishes responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training.

Resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking.
Contributes to development and evaluation of goals and objectives.
Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance.
May supervise,mentor, or coordinate work of others (positions that supervise are responsible for service delivery, quality assurance, and employee performance).
May independentlymanage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources.
Applies entry level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills. Decision making occurs within defined parameters. Supervisor defines assignments, expectations, anddeadlines. Supervisor may review work for quality.
Demonstrates initiative and discretion to resolve routine and non-routine matters.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Provides hands-on assistance in diverse medical physics functions within the department, with a strong emphasis on radiation therapy/oncology physics. Assists imaging, planning, treatment, and dosimetry procedures for research animals and/or specimens to support ongoing research/contracts, as directed.
Performs imaging, treatment planning, irradiation, and dosimetry procedures to support preclinical and translational experiments in radiation research and beyond.
Coordinates with faculty and staff to support research activities, including data management, radiation-based treatments/services procedures, shipping/receiving, good laboratory/documentation practices/compliance, and administrative tasks.
Contributes to the design, fabrication, and testing of phantoms and immobilization devices. Critically reviews experimental protocols.
Assists with equipment commissioning, qualification, validation, and calibration. Performs all aspects of quality assurance for radiation producing and measurement equipment (including kilovoltage radiobiological irradiators, medical linear accelerators, and optically-stimulated luminescence dosimeters), as directed.
Assists with equipment commissioning, qualification, validation, and calibration of radiation producing and measurement equipment. Performs all aspects of quality assurance to support a comprehensive quality assurance program for equipment, including but not limited to kilovoltage radiobiological irradiators, medical linear accelerators, and optically-stimulated luminescence dosimeters, as directed.
Reviews and analyzes results. May contribute to scientific reports.
Engages in routine and technical correspondence with clarity and initiative to support operations and research activities.
Maintains accurate, organized, and up-to-date records, files, and databases. Ensures all documentation is complete, accessible, and compliant with departmental and regulatory standards. Supports data integrity and retrieval for departmental operations and research activities.
Performs radiation safety checks as directed.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in physics or a closely related quantitative field (e.g., engineering, applied mathematics). Coursework or practical exposure to radiation physics, dosimetry, or medical imaging is preferred.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

HIRING RANGE: $83,000 - $92,000 per year / Commensurate with education and experience
