Job Title: Planting Manager

Classification: Exempt - full-time, weekdays, with some evenings and weekends required

Salary: $60,000 annually

Reports to: Director of Neighborhood Forestry

Date: June 2026

Position Description: The primary role of the Planting Manager is to plan, implement, oversee and support planting crews performing tree planting projects as BTT works to increase and maintain Baltimore's urban tree canopy. This includes providing logistical assistance and guidance, ensuring proper project tracking, assessing sites for future projects, and evaluating completed work for quality assurance/control purposes. The Planting Manager will report to the Director of Neighborhood Forestry and shall be responsible for the following job titles:

Supervisory Responsibilities: Crew Supervisors, Crew Leaders, Neighborhood Forestry Technicians

Responsibilities:

● Design plans, perform site assessments and develop operations projects for tree planting, with a focus on the right tree in the right place, including concrete removal and stump grinding throughout Baltimore City by scouting and using GIS.

● Coordinate day-to-day logistics of all tree planting projects.

● Oversee Crew Supervisors in the assessment and documentation of the quality of tree planting projects and coordinate with Crew Leaders to remedy any issues in a timely manner.

● Ensure tracking of daily, weekly, and seasonal performance metrics for all tree planting projects to refine operations and delegate project assignments to Crew Supervisors.

● Oversee Crew Supervisors and Leaders in field operations ensuring daily meetings with crews to include detailed reviews of next day locations, tasks, schedules, truck assignments, required equipment, tools, supplies and water.

● Ensure enforcement of all established safety and operational policies.

● Document and report incidents involving crews.

● Coordinate site damage response and repair coordination.

● Oversee operations team Supervisors during spring and fall planting seasons, and support the management team during summer tree care operations, in collaboration with the Tree Care Manager to ensure that operations run smoothly and goals are met.

● Oversee the use of GIS Assessment Leaders to locate plant-able sites during the summer months.

● Supervise Site Assessment Leader in the use of Google Maps for site analysis

● Oversee management of daily fleet operations and logistics (trucks and cars), ensuring vehicle availability, regulatory compliance, safety, tracking and scheduling of routine and situational maintenance, and efficient resource allocation to support organizational needs.

● Manage purchasing and ordering processes, maintaining inventory control systems.

● Manage grounds and facilities used by the planting team including outdoor work area, tool and supply storage, equipment storage unit, and vehicle and trailer parking and staging spaces.

● Manage inventory and supplies ensuring tools, equipment and supplies are fully stocked and in working order.

● Build trust among entire crew by providing clear direction and support.

● Monitor crew members’ achievement of day-to-day numbers and goals in support of performing bi-annual performance reviews in conjunction with the Director of Neighborhood Forestry.

● Monitor, verify, and approve time sheets for all crew members including time keeping reminders, and tracking of overall attendance and daily whereabouts.

● Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding new crew members.

● Manage disciplinary issues of crew members.

● Demonstrates an understanding of the physical and community-facing nature of planting work.

● Support volunteer participation through interaction with and incorporation into planting projects.

● Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

● At least 3 years of experience working in arboriculture or working in the environmental field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience

● Proven ability as an effective people leader and supervisor

● Ability to make practical field decisions

● Proven administrative experience with data entry, document management, correspondence, scheduling, and office operations

● Proven experience managing purchasing and ordering processes, maintaining inventory control systems, overseeing fleet vehicles and equipment

● Confident communication skills, including writing, public speaking, and interacting with crew members, volunteers, residents and organizational partners

● Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

● Problem-solving and decision-making skills

● Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects

● Proficiency with G-Suite, comfortable learning new software

● Familiarity with and ability to work well with diverse teams in the Baltimore area and its neighborhoods

Work Environment: This is an on-site position, including indoor and outdoor operations and travel to and work at offsite locations. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Physical Demands: Requires use of standard office equipment including indoor and outdoor use of laptop/tablet; use of tool and equipment common to tree planting. Must be physically able to sit, stand, bend, squat, and lift 40 pounds.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license required. CPR/First Aid/AED required or must be obtained within 90 days. Tree-keeper training is a plus.
