Full Job Description

The Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network (GMHCN) is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental health recovery and wellness through advocacy, education, employment, and peer support. GMHCN serves thousands of individuals across Georgia each year recovering from mental health and substance use challenges. GMHCN operates a $6 million annual budget across 6 locations statewide, funded entirely through government contracts.

We are seeking an experienced and mission-driven Controller to manage the organization's financial operations and ensure the ongoing fiscal health and compliance of the agency.

Position Summary

The Controller serves as the financial director responsible for directing and overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, contract accounting, internal controls, and audit activities of the organization, including coordination of financial operations across GMHCN's 6 program locations.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and supervising the Accounts Payable Specialist, the Controller provides financial management to support organizational growth, sustainability, and operational excellence. Because a substantial portion of GMHCN's revenue is derived from government contracts, this role is responsible for overseeing complex cost allocation across programs and locations, administering indirect cost allocation, ensuring contract compliance, and maintaining year-round readiness for Single Audits and other governmental financial reviews. The ideal candidate will possess strong nonprofit accounting expertise, government contract accounting experience, and the ability to communicate financial information effectively to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.

Essential Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

Provide strategic financial leadership and recommendations to the CEO and leadership team.
Develop and maintain long-term financial plans and forecasts.
Analyze financial performance and identify opportunities for improved efficiency and sustainability.
Support organizational growth initiatives through financial planning and resource allocation.

Accounting & Financial Operations

Direct all accounting operations, including: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, fixed assets, and financial reporting.
Directly supervise the Accounts Payable Specialist, including workflow oversight and performance management.
Coordinate accounting operations, cost allocation, and cash management across GMHCN's 6 program locations from the Tucker, GA office; this role does not require regular travel to other sites.
Ensure financial records are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements.

Budget Development & Management

Prepare all documents for the annual budgeting process.
Monitor organizational performance against approved budgets.
Work collaboratively with department and site leaders to manage expenditures and revenue projections across all 6 locations and over 12 government contracts.
Prepare financial forecasts, variance analyses, and management reports.

Government Contract & Grant Management

Oversee accounting and compliance for GMHCN's federal, state, and local government contracts, which comprise the majority of agency funding, as well as any private grants.
Administer cost allocation methodology and the organization's negotiated indirect cost rate.
Ensure proper expenditure tracking and allocation of restricted funds.
Prepare and review government contract and grant financial reports.
Monitor compliance with funding requirements and contract obligations.

Audit & Compliance

Serve as primary liaison for external auditors.
Lead preparation for GMHCN's annual financial statement audit and annual Single Audit, which is required given the organization's federal expenditure level.
Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, federal regulations (including 2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance), and state requirements.
Coordinate preparation of IRS Form 990 and other regulatory filings.
Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies.

Board & Leadership Support

Present financial reports and analyses to executive leadership, Board Finance Committees, and the Board of Directors.
Support informed decision-making through financial insights and recommendations.
Assist leadership with operational and strategic planning initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field. (Preferred Master’s degree)
Minimum of 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
Minimum of 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
Experience in nonprofit accounting and financial management.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.
Experience managing government contracts and/or grant funding sources.
Working knowledge of 2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance and federal grant/contract compliance.
Experience with Single Audits and nonprofit financial reporting.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, QuickBooks Online and other financial software management.
Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred

CPA designation strongly preferred.
Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
Experience with behavioral health, healthcare, or human services organizations.
Experience with multi-site nonprofit financial operations.
