Full Job Description

Position Title: Case Manager

Location: Champaign-Urbana

Reports To: Executive Director

Employment Type: Full-Time

Overview

Immigrant Services of Champaign-Urbana (ISCU) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a welcoming community for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. We provide comprehensive support to help individuals navigate systemic barriers and access essential services while fostering integration and empowerment. ISCU’s services include case management, advocacy, resource coordination, mental health support, and education about local systems, all designed to meet the diverse and complex needs of our clients.

The Case Manager serves as the first point of contact for clients seeking assistance and plays a critical role in ISCU’s mission. This position involves assessing client needs, creating personalized service plans, and coordinating access to housing, health care, education, and legal resources. The Case Manager ensures language barriers are addressed, advocates for equitable access to services, and provides trauma-informed care to clients during crises.

As part of ISCU’s holistic approach, the Case Manager works closely with other team members and community partners to deliver culturally appropriate support and foster meaningful community integration. By addressing both immediate challenges and long-term goals, the Case Manager empowers clients to move beyond survival and achieve stability and independence.

Responsibilities

Client Intake and Assessment

Conduct intake assessments to gather essential case information, including clients’ immediate needs, long-term goals, and barriers to stability.
Coordinate services available through ISCU’s programs and develop individualized referral plans for needs outside the scope of ISCU’s assistance.

Client Advocacy and Support

Coordinate services to address clients’ specific circumstances, collaborating with community resources to meet their housing, healthcare, educational, and legal needs.
Ensure language access by arranging interpretation services and translation of essential documents for appointments or meetings with clients.
Actively advocate for clients by liaising with service providers, landlords, healthcare systems, and educational institutions to secure equitable access to resources.
Accompany clients to critical appointments, providing emotional support, clarifying processes, and empowering them to navigate local systems confidently.
Assist clients in navigating the legal system and attending and complying with immigration-related documents and appointments but does not provide legal advice or counsel in any capacity.

Crisis Intervention

Respond promptly to urgent situations, such as housing instability, medical emergencies, or domestic violence, by developing safety plans, coordinating emergency services, and connecting clients to critical resources.
Offer compassionate, trauma-informed support to clients in crisis, addressing immediate needs while working toward sustainable solutions.

Case Management and Documentation

Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and data in compliance with organizational standards and grant reporting requirements.
Uphold strict client confidentiality in all aspects of case management.
Regularly update data systems to track service utilization and program effectiveness, contributing to the organization’s ability to measure impact and secure funding.

Community Collaboration

Build and maintain strong relationships with community organizations to connect clients with culturally appropriate services that align with their needs.
Educate service providers about the unique challenges faced by immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, advocating for systemic changes to improve accessibility and equity in service delivery.

Qualifications

Required:

At least 1 year of experience in either nonprofit organizations, case management, direct service, family and children related services, or advocacy roles.
Knowledge of or willingness to undergo training in the unique challenges faced by immigrants, including systemic barriers, legal processes, and immigration-related trauma.
Demonstrated cultural humility and sensitivity, with a commitment to understanding of systemic inequities, and the impact of social determinants on marginalized populations.
Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a collaborative, team-oriented work culture.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to adapt communication styles to diverse audiences and varying language skill levels across both languages.
A valid driver’s license for local travel.

Preferred:

Bilingual in English and Spanish, with the ability to facilitate conversations and written communication in both languages.
Previous experience as a Case Manager, including direct client support, service planning, and resource coordination.
Experience working with marginalized populations, including undocumented individuals, asylum seekers, or survivors of trauma.
Familiarity with local community resources, public benefits systems, and service networks available to immigrant populations.
Experience working in nonprofit organizations, particularly in roles that required navigating systems and building community partnerships.
