Senior Commissioning Manager – Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems

Location: Remote – United States
Job Type: Full-time
Travel: Approximately 20% throughout the United States, with occasional international travel possible

Position Overview

Our client, a growing global leader in renewable-energy technology, is seeking an experienced Senior Commissioning Manager to build and lead its U.S. Commissioning Department.

Reporting to senior service leadership, this department-head position will oversee all commissioning activities from initial planning through customer acceptance and project handoff. The successful candidate will establish the department’s organizational structure, recruit and develop a high-performing team, create commissioning programs and standards, and serve as the senior technical authority for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the United States.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accomplished BESS commissioning professional who enjoys combining hands-on technical leadership with department building, team development, and customer-facing execution.

Key Responsibilities

Build, lead, and scale the U.S. Commissioning Department from the ground up.
Recruit, onboard, train, mentor, and manage commissioning engineers and coordinators.
Establish the department’s organizational structure, staffing model, workflows, and resource-allocation strategy.
Develop, implement, and continuously improve BESS commissioning programs, processes, technical standards, and quality-assurance protocols.
Create and maintain commissioning documentation, including plans, test procedures, acceptance criteria, checklists, and project handoff packages.
Lead and oversee field commissioning for utility-scale BESS projects throughout the United States, ensuring safe, timely, and high-quality delivery.
Direct integrated system testing involving Battery Management Systems (BMS), Power Conversion Systems (PCS), and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
Manage commissioning schedules, field resources, and site coordination in alignment with project milestones and contractual requirements.
Serve as the senior technical authority during critical commissioning activities.
Oversee performance and capacity-acceptance testing, validate results against project specifications, and manage customer sign-off.
Act as the primary commissioning point of contact for customers, executive leadership, and internal stakeholders.
Collaborate with Project Management, Engineering, Field Service, Product Engineering, and R&D to ensure commissioning activities align with project schedules and deliverables.
Coordinate with the Service Department to utilize and train service technicians for assigned projects and prepare them for the transition into ongoing operations.
Establish departmental KPIs, monitor performance, and provide regular reports to leadership.
Conduct team performance evaluations and support professional development across the department.
Translate field findings and lessons learned into product, process, and documentation improvements.
Support proposal development by providing commissioning scope, scheduling, and resource estimates.
Identify and mitigate commissioning risks while maintaining accurate project records, metrics, and lessons-learned documentation.
Ensure full compliance with safety requirements, applicable codes, industry standards, and company procedures.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant practical experience may be considered.
At least 8 years of experience commissioning utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems.
Hands-on experience managing the complete commissioning lifecycle, from pre-commissioning inspections through system testing and customer acceptance.
Demonstrated success building, leading, and managing a commissioning department or team within the energy-storage or power-systems industry.
Proven ability to create commissioning programs, processes, standards, and technical documentation from the ground up.
Experience managing commissioning portfolios involving multiple concurrent projects and field deployments across several U.S. states.
Strong knowledge of BESS architecture, controls, system integration, testing, and troubleshooting.

Required Technical Expertise

Candidates should possess advanced working knowledge of:

Battery Management Systems (BMS): Architecture, control logic, alarm interpretation, and system configuration.
Power Conversion Systems (PCS): System operation, grid codes, protection schemes, testing, troubleshooting, and fault diagnosis.
Energy Management Systems (EMS): System integration, communication protocols, controls, and site-level operation.
Grid-interconnection requirements, utility-protection coordination, and interconnection testing.
Performance testing, capacity testing, commissioning acceptance standards, and customer handoff requirements.

Work Location and Travel

This is a remote, home-based position open to qualified candidates residing in the United States. Approximately 20% travel to project sites across the country is expected, with the possibility of occasional international travel.

Candidates must also be able to support commissioning activities outside standard business hours when project schedules or critical milestones require it.
