Get Certified! We strongly encourage technicians to obtain their Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) credential through IJCAHPO. We pay for the certification and continuing education courses. CE credits are earned both electronically and by attending inperson at major Ophthalmology conferences across the country.

As an Ophthalmic Technician, you'll play a key role in supporting our physicians and ensuring an exceptional patient experience. Your primary responsibilities will include:

Patient Interaction & History Taking
Past ocular and medical history
Update and review patient records to ensure the most accurate and current information.

Clinical Skills & Diagnostics
Measure and record visual acuity (both near and distance) and perform pinhole testing.
Perform or assist with subjective manifest refraction assessments
IOP tonometry, pupil evaluations, anterior chamber depth estimations, cover testing, confrontational visual fields, and evaluate ocular motility.
Administer eye drops properly and understand their indications and contraindications.
Perform basic diagnostic tests such as visual fields, OCT imaging (cornea and retina), fundus photography, corneal topography and tomography, ARGOS and IOLM biometry, pachymetry, Lipiview, and Specular Microscopy.
Accurately measure current lens prescriptions using a lensometer.

Instrument Care & Maintenance
Ensure ophthalmic equipment is clean, calibrated, and maintained.
Keep exam rooms fully stocked and compliant with medication expiration guidelines.
Follow The Eye Institute of Utah’s protocols for equipment maintenance and drop inventory.

Advanced Skills & Specialty Support (as needed)
Assist in performing specialized tests, ultrasounds, and laser vision correction surgery. Support IOL calculations and surgery planning, measure prism, and help with contact lens fittings. Additionally, assist with minor in-office procedures like corneal crosslinking and other advanced diagnostic and treatment tasks.
Serve as a physician scribe during patient examinations, documenting patient histories, examination findings, and treatment plans accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
We’re seeking someone who is detail-oriented, compassionate, and eager to learn. To be successful in this role, you should have:
Ophthalmology Experience: Previous experience in ophthalmology is preferred but not required. We provide on-the-job training to support your growth and success in this role.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Eligibility: Ability to legally work in the United States.
Technical Skills: Basic computer literacy (EMR experience preferred).
Professionalism: A positive attitude, reliability, and the ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
