Full Job Description

We are a new 34 Bed Memory Care/Assisted Living community opening soon in Martinez, CA.

JOB TITLE: Caregiver

REPORTS TO: Med Tech/Administrator

STATUS: Non-exempt position paid an hourly wage.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this job description is to establish and define the duties, responsibilities,

authority and reporting relationship of the position of the Caregiver.

POSITION TYPE: Days, Hours and Overtime vary depending on location.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Caregivers are the primary staff assigned to provide personal care and attending to residents with memory impairments and/or physical limitations. Hands on care by Caregivers is the center piece of the facility’s day to day operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the Caregiver:

· Know the location and disposition of all residents (under direct care) at all times.

· Ensure each resident looks clean and presentable. Assist with dressing, applying makeup, combing hair, cleaning eyeglasses, and assisting with other personal grooming tasks as needed.

· Keep resident’s rooms in proper order throughout the day, including tidying rooms, making beds, and putting clothes away and assist residents by providing for their comfort, safety and enjoyment.

Assist residents with scheduled toileting, perineum care, hygiene, skin care, and support for episodic incontinence as the need arises.
Assist residents with resident mobility and transfers according to approved assistance protocols.

· Keep any internal charts current, know of each resident's needs, and report all observed physical and emotional changes in residents to the Shift Manager and Assistant Administrator/Care Coordinator. Report should occur by the end of the shift and should be documented in the change-over notes, unless immediate intervention is needed.

· Assist with bathing and dressing of residents as scheduled or directed. Assist residents at mealtime as needed, assist residents with personal hygiene needs as needed throughout the shift, assist residents with daily recreational activities, including crafts, games, music and exercise and encourage participation and follow any written work schedules and service schedules.

· Attend periodic staff meetings and in-service training and mandatory meeting as required. Read, follow and sign any care plans and posted messages and/or updates during each shift.

· Observe Resident's Rights, as posted within the facility.

· Promptly respond to resident calls for assistance.

· In Emergency situations, assist residents according to the Emergency Plan of the facility. Assist with First Aid as directed.

· This role involves working with residents who may have complex needs, including those who may be experiencing cognitive or behavioral changes. Patience, empathy, and the ability to handle stressful situations with professionalism and compassion are essential.

· Maintain a cooperative and cheerful attitude when relating to residents or their guests.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Completes and follows in house safety program and insures compliance with all safety laws (i.e. OSHA, Title 22, Fire Authority, etc.)
Understands and promotes the community’s fire and accident prevention, sanitation procedures, and use of fire safety equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

No specific education required. Certified Nurse Assistant or Home Health Aid Certification preferred

· At least some prior experience in caring for the elderly is preferred and be at least (18) years old.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS & AUTHORITY:

· Reports to either Shift Manager, Care Coordinator or Administrator and does not supervise other staff.

· Caregivers only have the authority to perform their job duties and responsibilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is completed primarily indoors, but some outdoor work possible. The environment can be fast-paced and the noise level may vary from quiet to moderately loud depending on various factors. The role may involve working on weekends, holidays, overtime or during emergencies based on resident needs and shift schedules. Travel is not generally required, but is a possibility.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, often for the majority of the shift.
Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and crouching to assist residents with daily activities.
Ability to lift 50 pounds, move or transfer residents using proper body mechanics and lifting techniques to prevent injury.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Each employee must have a physical examination and tuberculin test performed by a physician. The tests are to be completed (with results) within seven (7) days after hire (unless regulations stipulate completion before employment.) If the exams are not completed within this time, the employee will be placed on suspension until they are completed.

· The Department of Social Services (DSS) licensing agency requires that fingerprint cards and an affidavit on criminal convictions be submitted for the purpose of conducting a criminal record review. The DSS will issue an approval or denial according to the criminal clearance reports. An approval must be obtained in order to retain employment

· Willing to submit to any drug screening as requested or required.

· All employees must keep their FIRST-AID certification current.

· Ability to handle confidential information and conduct themselves in a pleasant, cooperative, and courteous manner.

· Ability to accept direction and work as a team player.

· Skill in compassionately caring for elderly, knowledge of proper caregiving techniques, and the ability to care for several residents at one time.

· Organizational Skills -Must be able to able to maintain order and efficiency in performing job duties, and maintain constant pace.

· Mental - Must be able to handle stress well, stay calm under pressure. Must be able to think and make decisions consistent with policies and procedures and licensing regulations.
