The New York City Muslim Center (NYCMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and home to one of the Largest Muslim Centers in New York City. Our 60,000 sq. ft. facility impacts over 2,000 lives weekly and serves as the headquarters for:

Position Overview

NYC Muslim Center is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to support employee performance, accountability, employee relations, staff engagement, and organizational culture across NYCMC and its programs.

This position is specifically focused on the people-management and performance side of Human Resources. The HR Manager will work closely with organizational leadership, supervisors, and employees to ensure expectations are clearly communicated, employees receive appropriate coaching and feedback, performance concerns are addressed consistently, and the culture and professional standards of NYCMC are maintained.

This is not a full-cycle HR Generalist position. The HR Manager will not have primary responsibility for payroll, or all organizational HR compliance functions.

Key Responsibilities

Employee Performance & Accountability

Monitor employee performance and ensure staff are being held accountable to organizational expectations, policies, and professional standards.
Meet with supervisors and employees regarding performance concerns.
Assist supervisors in establishing clear expectations, measurable goals, and appropriate follow-up.
Ensure performance concerns are addressed in a timely, fair, and consistent manner.
Track recurring employee performance concerns and identify patterns requiring leadership attention.

Performance Improvement Plans

Develop and manage employee Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs).
Establish measurable expectations, timelines, and follow-up requirements.
Conduct regular PIP follow-up meetings with employees and supervisors.
Maintain appropriate documentation regarding progress, concerns, and outcomes.
Provide recommendations to leadership regarding employees who successfully complete or fail to meet the requirements of a PIP.

Employee Evaluations & Development

Ensure supervisors are conducting required employee evaluations and performance conversations.
Assist managers with preparing meaningful and objective employee evaluations.
Support the development of employees through coaching, feedback, and accountability.
Identify employees requiring additional support, training, or professional development.

Manager Coaching & Support

Coach supervisors and managers on addressing employee performance and behavioral concerns.
Help managers prepare for difficult employee conversations.
Guide supervisors on providing constructive feedback and documenting concerns appropriately.
Support managers in maintaining consistency and professionalism when addressing employee matters.

Employee Relations

Meet with employees regarding workplace concerns, conflicts, communication issues, and employee-relations matters.
Assist with resolving workplace conflicts professionally and appropriately.
Conduct fact-finding meetings and support internal reviews of employee concerns when necessary.
Promote healthy communication between employees, supervisors, and leadership.
Escalate serious employee-relations concerns to appropriate leadership.

Staff Culture & Engagement

Monitor employee morale, engagement, professionalism, and workplace culture.
Help reinforce NYCMC's mission, values, workplace expectations, and organizational culture.
Identify areas where staff engagement or morale may be declining and recommend solutions.
Support staff-engagement initiatives, recognition efforts, and activities that strengthen organizational culture.
Ensure employees understand what is expected of them as members of the NYCMC team.

Documentation & Reporting

Maintain clear and confidential documentation regarding performance issues, employee-relations matters, coaching conversations, corrective actions, and PIPs.
Ensure appropriate follow-up occurs after employee meetings.
Provide leadership with regular updates regarding staff performance, employee-relations trends, workplace culture, and areas of concern.
Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive employee information.

Candidate Interviews & Hiring Support

Participate in candidate interviews as requested.
Evaluate candidates for professionalism, communication, organizational culture fit, accountability, and alignment with NYCMC's mission and expectations.
Provide hiring recommendations and feedback to leadership.
Assist leadership in identifying candidates who demonstrate the characteristics of strong, accountable, and mission-aligned team members.

Qualifications

Required

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
Prior experience in Human Resources, employee relations, performance management, management, or organizational leadership.
Demonstrated experience handling difficult employee conversations and workplace concerns.
Strong interpersonal, communication, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills.
Strong documentation and organizational skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee matters professionally.
Ability to hold employees accountable while maintaining fairness, professionalism, and consistency.
Strong judgment and the ability to communicate effectively with employees at different levels of the organization.

Preferred

3+ years of Human Resources or employee-relations experience.
Experience managing Performance Improvement Plans and corrective-action processes.
Experience coaching supervisors or managers.
HR experience within a school, nonprofit organization, religious organization, or mission-driven workplace.
SHRM-CP, PHR, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or similar HR certification.
Experience interviewing and evaluating employment candidates.

Pay: $35,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
