Demand & Supply Planning Manager - Consumer Products Import

We are an established importer of residential furniture - upholstery, dining, bedroom, and case goods - sold through national retail and e-commerce channels. Product is built by manufacturing partners across Asia, primarily Vietnam and China, and moves by ocean freight on a 60 to 90 day lead time. Every buying decision gets made months before the demand shows up.

We are hiring one person to own that decision.

What you'll own

Build and maintain the demand forecast by SKU and collection, and translate it into purchase order timing: what we buy, in what quantity, on which vessel, so product lands ahead of a stock-out rather than after one.
Own the open-purchase-order book — what's committed, what's on the water, what hasn't entered production and is therefore still changeable.
Track rate of sale against weeks of supply and flag coverage risk on core collections early, with the options priced out: expedite, split shipment, air freight, reallocate, and the landed date of each.
Own the weekly planning view that sales, merchandising, and finance all work from: on hand, on order, rate of sale, weeks of supply, landed timing.
Partner with sales on the forecast, and hold the line when the forecast and the enthusiasm disagree.
Analyze sell-through and turn by collection, and recommend what to reorder, what to reduce, and what to exit.
Manage supply against the plan: hold factories and our overseas offices to committed ship dates, escalate slippage with the sell-through consequence quantified, and run RFQs and cost comparisons when sourcing moves.

Beyond planning. Because we are a small team, this role also carries the product-side work that determines whether what arrives is what we specified: oversight of the inspection program run by our in-country teams, ownership of the compliance and certification file (CARB / TSCA, PFAS, flammability, FSC, certificates of conformity, Prop 65, labeling), import documentation, and the accuracy of product specs published online. You will coordinate and decide on these; you will not be performing inspections. Expect this to be roughly a quarter of the job.

What we're looking for

Five or more years in demand planning, supply planning, inventory planning, or merchandise planning. You have owned a forecast and been accountable for it, and you can explain a miss and what you changed as a result.
Comfort planning against long lead times, where the commitment happens 60 to 120 days before the sale.
Advanced Excel — pivot tables, lookups, and building a working report from raw system exports without help. You will build the planning view yourself.
Experience working with overseas suppliers or factories, directly or through an agent or overseas office.
Working knowledge of import mechanics: purchase orders, container planning, freight timing, landed cost.
Strong written communication. A large share of this job is making a recommendation someone else has to act on.

Helpful, not required

Furniture, home furnishings, or big-ticket hard goods.
Familiarity with U.S. consumer product compliance for furniture: CARB / TSCA, flammability, Prop 65, labeling, certificates of conformity.
Experience with a major national retailer's vendor requirements and portals.
SQL, Power BI, or another reporting tool beyond Excel.
You have written and rolled out a planning process where none existed before.

Direct access. You work with decision-makers, not through them. When your analysis says change the order, the conversation happens that week.
Build the system. The planning infrastructure here is yours to design. If you want to inherit a mature S&OP process, this will frustrate you. If you have wanted to build one, this is the job.
Real breadth. Planning is the core, and you'll also see sourcing, compliance, and product data. You will understand the whole product lifecycle, not one slice of it.
