Job Description

Aker Club is hiring its first employee and Store Manager for our first store in downtown Rochester. We are looking for someone with grocery or food retail management experience who wants to apply their skills at a new kind of city grocery store.

This position is a unique opportunity to help launch a new grocery store from the ground up. As Aker Club’s first employee, the Store Manager will play a key role in developing the store’s operating model alongside ownership. Responsibilities and decision-making authority will evolve as the business launches and operating procedures are refined.

Our ideal candidate has direct grocery management experience at the department level or higher. We view this role as an opportunity to gain whole-store experience on a smaller scale. Aker Club will have many of the same departments as a standard supermarket, just in a condensed format. Your knowledge of the finer details of running a grocery store will be critical to the success of the store and will help round out ownership’s business operations.

Aker Club will operate under a unique business model, with several components still under final development. The store will use a free membership model, automated entry and exit, and self-checkout. Our ideal candidate is comfortable with technology, able to troubleshoot basic store systems, and able to clearly escalate recurring issues as the model continues to develop.

Aker Club expects to launch in early August. The salaried position is expected to start the week before store launch. Preference will be given to candidates who are available on an ad-hoc basis before the salaried start date, with pre-launch work paid hourly at $24–$26/hr with flexible hours.

This is a full-time salaried position expected to average 40–50 hours per week. Availability during evenings, weekends, and store launch activities is required.

Location

Aker Club is located at 252 E Main St, Rochester, NY. Discounted parking is available. The store is located within a 2-minute walk of the Rochester Transit Center, allowing convenient mass transit access from almost all RTS routes.

Responsibilities

Ownership will initially lead vendor relationships, ordering strategy, inventory planning, finance, payroll, and other back-office functions. The Store Manager will focus on strong in-store execution while helping shape which responsibilities should be delegated as the store stabilizes.

Lead daily store operations, including opening, closing, floor readiness, and store standards
Keep the sales floor clean, organized, stocked, and easy to shop
Execute replenishment plans, including stocking, rotation, date checks, and out-of-stock follow-up
Receive deliveries and maintain an organized backroom
Support member enrollment, store access, self-checkout, and customer questions
Troubleshoot basic store technology issues and escalate recurring problems
Help maintain shrink control through observation, documentation, and non-confrontational issue handling
Train, schedule, and direct store leads and attendants as the team grows
Build and improve practical store procedures during launch and stabilization
Support soft opening and grand opening activities
Provide regular feedback to ownership on customers, products, staffing, shrink, and operations
Take on additional responsibilities over time as the operating model develops

Requirements

3+ years of experience in grocery, food retail, convenience, pharmacy, or small-format retail
At least 1 year in a lead, department manager, assistant manager, or store manager role
Hands-on experience with core store operations, including stocking, receiving, replenishment, customer support, and daily store standards
Experience maintaining food safety, cleanliness, product rotation, and date-checking standards
Familiarity with shrink control, inventory accuracy, and loss prevention practices
Strong comfort learning new technology systems and troubleshooting basic store technology issues before escalating
Able to work independently in a small team and help build practical processes as the store develops
Able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 40–50 lbs
High school diploma or equivalent
Food safety certification, such as ServSafe Manager or equivalent, or willingness to obtain before opening

Preferred

Experience opening a new store, launching new procedures, or working in a startup or early-stage retail environment
Experience solving basic POS, checkout, scanner, printer, kiosk, tablet, or software issues in a retail environment
Interest in growing into broader responsibilities over time, including ordering, vendor coordination, inventory planning, hiring, or store performance tracking

Benefits

Salary range of $45,000–$55,000 annually. Aker Club expects to offer employer-sponsored health insurance, dental and vision coverage, life/disability benefits, a 401(k) plan with employer match, three weeks of paid vacation, paid sick leave, and required New York employer benefits including workers’ compensation, disability benefits coverage, and Paid Family Leave. Uniform/PPE support may also be provided.

Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
