Director of Family Ministries

First United Methodist Church, Victoria, TX

Summary

The Director of Family Ministries provides visionary leadership, coordination, and oversight across all church ministries serving families, children, and youth. This role advances FUMC Victoria’s mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ by fostering meaningful connections within the church and the broader community. The Director cultivates a multigenerational ministry that nurtures spiritual growth, builds relationships, and engages families in the life of the church.

Qualifications

· College degree preferred.

· Background in education or nonprofit work is ideal.

· Strong and growing Christian faith and a commitment to the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ.

· Must teach, lead and conduct ministry in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the beliefs, doctrine and practices of the United Methodist Church.

· Professional or volunteer experience in children’s, youth, or family ministry.

· Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

· Experience recruiting, training, and leading volunteers.

· Proficiency in communication tools, social media, and administrative systems.

· Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record and Safe Gatherings certification.

Team Leadership: Recruits, equips, encourages, and empowers volunteers to serve effectively. Delegates responsibilities appropriately, fosters teamwork, and provides guidance and accountability.

Organization: Demonstrates strong organizational, planning, and time management skills while effectively managing multiple priorities and ministry details.

Hospitality: Creates welcoming, safe, and inclusive environments where children, youth, and families feel valued, connected, and encouraged to grow in faith.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Community Engagement & Outreach

· Develop, organize, and lead outreach initiatives that connect the church with the local community.

· Build partnerships with local organizations to expand mission and outreach opportunities.

· Plan and lead events that welcome new individuals and families into the life of the church.

· Maintain ongoing communication with families and community connections.

Family Ministry

· Develop a cohesive strategy that integrates children, youth, and parents into the church's life.

· Foster strong relationships with families, including Day School families.

· Equip parents to support faith formation at home.

· Plan and implement intergenerational events that strengthen faith and community.

Children’s Ministry (Birth – 5th Grade)

· Oversee all children’s programming, including Sunday School, children’s church and midweek activities.

· Organize special events such as Vacation Bible School and Summer camps.

· Select and implement age-appropriate curriculum.

· Recruit, train, and schedule volunteers.

· Coordinate children’s participation in worship and seasonal church-wide events.

Youth Ministry (Grades 6–12)

· Oversee all youth programming, including Sunday School and midweek gatherings.

· Organize mission trips, retreats, camps, fellowship events, and service opportunities.

· Select and implement age-appropriate curriculum.

· Recruit, train and schedule volunteers and youth sponsors.

· Coordinate youth participation in worship and seasonal church-wide events.

· Provide annual confirmation programming in collaboration with the clergy and confirmation sponsors.

· Mentor youth spiritual growth and servant leadership development.

Leadership & Administration

· Recruit, train, and sustain volunteer teams across all family ministry areas.

· Ensure compliance with safety policies, background checks, and certifications.

· Attend staff and leadership meetings and collaborate closely with the Senior Pastor and church staff.

· Maintain clear and consistent communication with families and the congregation.

· Ensure classrooms, spaces and events are prepared, safe, and welcoming.

· Support the overall mission and daily ministry life of the church.

· Maintain accurate attendance records and ministry database information.

· Stay current with trends and best practices in family ministry through ongoing training, workshops, and/or conferences in collaboration with SPRC and Senior Pastor. Approved training and professional development expenses will be funded by the church.

· Convene and facilitate quarterly Family Ministry Council meetings for prayer, feedback, evaluation, and planning, engaging members in shaping the vision and direction of the ministry.

· Develop, submit, and manage the annual family ministry budget.

Expectations

· Be present for Sunday worship and key church events.

· Maintain a healthy, growing personal spiritual life.

· Actively engage in the life of the church and community.

· Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to support the broader needs of the church.

· Maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to families and church members.

Benefits & Salary

· This is a part-time position of less than 30 hours per week, with vacation time pro-rated for hours per week worked. Time off approved by Senior Pastor.

· Paid holidays

· Job performance and compensation will be evaluated annually by the Senior Pastor and Staff-Parish Relations Committee.
