Sanu is a postnatal retreat in Northern Virginia dedicated to caring for parents and newborns during the fourth trimester — the fragile, beautiful weeks right after birth. We're growing our per diem team and looking for gentle, reliable Newborn Care & Postpartum Retreat Assistants who find real meaning in caring for babies and supporting new mothers.

This is hands-on, heart-centered work in a serene, non-clinical setting. If you're the kind of person who soothes a fussy newborn with ease and takes quiet pride in making a tired mom's day a little softer, keep reading.

The heart of the job

Guided by our postpartum doulas, you'll care for newborns (birth to 12 weeks) in our round-the-clock nursery and support new mothers with restorative, comforting services throughout their stay. You'll thrive here if you're equally comfortable taking initiative on your own and working closely with a team.

A day in this role might include

Caring for babies in our nursery

Providing warm, attentive care to infants from newborn to 12 weeks old.
Feeding, diapering, soothing, and tending to each baby's individual needs.
Keeping the nursery safe, calm, and spotlessly hygienic around the clock.

Supporting new mothers and our doulas

Assisting our postpartum doulas with newborn care and daily tasks as directed.
Offering evidence-based comfort services such as foot, hand, and scalp massage and aromatherapy.
Sharing light education and gentle mindfulness moments with families.
Keeping suites serene — clearing dishes, handling trash, and washing baby laundry.
Helping with meal service to our parenting families.
Restocking supplies and sanitizing shared spaces.

Keeping thoughtful records

Documenting infant care, observations, and shift notes accurately.
Following each family's personalized care plan.
Meeting all childcare documentation standards and protocols.
Flagging any concerns to the right team member right away.

What we hope you bring

A CPR certification (required) and a calm, caring presence around newborns.
A warm, patient temperament and true passion for supporting families postpartum.
Comfort with core infant care — feeding, diapering, and soothing.
Familiarity with safe breastmilk handling and bottle preparation.
Strong, kind communication with both babies and adults.
The flexibility to work independently and take direction gracefully as part of a team.
Reliability and discretion — our families are trusting us during a private, vulnerable time.
Nice to have: prior childcare or nursery experience, hands-on newborn experience, and a basic grounding in infant development.

Schedule & logistics

Type: Per diem / independent contractor (1099); seasonal shifts available
Shift lengths: 4-, 8-, and 12-hour options
Availability: Day (preferred), Night (required), Overnight (required)
Where: On-site in McLean, VA 22102 — reliable commute required (relocation before start also welcome)
