Full Job Description

The Alleghany Humane Society (AHS) in Covington, VA is seeking a Shelter Manager to provide team leadership and support in fulfilling our organization’s mission. We are a nonprofit animal shelter whose mission is to rescue homeless dogs and cats and to place them in loving homes. The shelter currently cares for almost 800 animals per year and fulfills animal sheltering contracts with Alleghany County, Covington, and Clifton Forge.

Position Overview

The Shelter Manager ensures smooth, day-to-day shelter operations in accordance with state laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. He/she will be responsible for the planning, development, and execution of operations and programs of the AHS shelter within the framework approved by the Board of Directors. The areas of responsibility include: operations, personnel, financial, and public relations. The Shelter Manager reports directly to, and works under the direction of, the AHS Board of Directors. This position works closely with staff, board members, volunteers, customers, visitors, corporate partners, community members, and more.

Job Duties

The essential duties listed below are representative of those the Shelter Manager will be expected to undertake and perform successfully.

Ensures the well-being, care, and humane treatment of animals. Maintains knowledge of Virginia state regulation regarding animal welfare.

Works with staff to ensure the health of each animal at the shelter, to include scheduling vet visits, routine shots, tests, and spay/neuter.

Strives to achieve no-kill results and to find timely placement for adoptable pets that enter our care. Provides resources and information to support pet owners in the community.

Covers for kennel attendants infrequently, as needed.

Manages the hiring, scheduling, supervising, evaluating, disciplining, training, development and termination of staff members.

Ensures the implementation of policies and personnel training programs that help staff and volunteers accomplish shelter tasks and goals.

Ensures that records and animal data are up to date and accurate.

Prepares regular operating reports regarding shelter and animal care for the Board of Directors.

Submits reports to animal welfare data monitoring websites in a timely manner.

Maintains a clean, safe, and efficient work environment. Assures that shelter maintenance and safety needs are met.

Sees that physical shelter and all related equipment are maintained in good working order.

Ensures that food and other animal care supplies are procured and maintained as needed.

Prepares shelter for emergency weather conditions or other hazards.

Manages office operations to include timely phone, messaging, and email monitoring and replies.

Manages and promotes the community spay/neuter program facilitated by AHS.

Manages and promotes the organization’s presence on social media.

Manages and promotes volunteer and foster care programs.

Recommends policies, plans, and programs to the Board of Directors and ensures they are regularly reviewed and modified in an efficient manner. Ensures that strategic goals in support of the mission are current and effectively implemented.

Serves as a liaison between the Board of Directors and shelter staff.

Helps to monitor the financial health of the organization to ensure fiscally responsible operation, to include receipt and safekeeping of funds. Recommends cost-saving measures to the Board.

Assists with fundraising as needed.

Attends pertinent workshops and seminars as approved by the Board of Directors.

Skills Required

The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and abilities required to successfully serve as the Shelter Manager.

Prior experience as a shelter manager or equivalent role in a non-profit or animal welfare organization is preferred. Advanced/college education preferred. Prior successful management and supervisory experience is required. Pay commensurate with experience with a starting range of $20-$24/hr.

Knowledge of animal welfare issues including pertinent legislation preferred.

Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and supervise individuals while maintaining a spirit of teamwork.

Demonstrated program management skills which include planning, coordination, attention to detail and organization. Ability to help grow the organization per the priorities set by the Board of Directors.

Experience with sound financial management.

Commitment to professional ethics in working with confidential and sensitive information.

Ability to work with animal welfare and other organizations.

Strong interpersonal, writing, and public speaking skills focused on building alliances with community organizations and establishing and maintaining relationships with our community, donors, and volunteers.

Ability to multitask and solve problems in a dynamic environment, to deliver under pressure, and to work independently.

Skill in the use of computer technology.

Ability to work weekends and to lift 50 lbs.

Meeting of background requirement checks.

A positive, “can-do” attitude.

The shelter is staffed from 8am-4pm daily. The Shelter Manager will generally work a 5 day schedule to be determined. Some weekends and holidays will be included in the work schedule.

Alleghany Humane Society Mission: The mission of this organization shall be to serve as a safe haven for stray or unwanted companion animals, educate the public about proper care and treatment of pets, advocate animal welfare, spay and neuter, and promote adoption to reduce pet homelessness.

Pay: $20.00 - $24.00 per hour
