Full Job Description

Job Title: Melt Foreman (Aluminum Smelting / Melt Shop)

Position Summary

The Melt Foreman is responsible for supervising daily operations of the melt shop, including furnace charging, melting, alloying, and metal handling processes. This role ensures production targets, quality specifications, safety standards, and environmental compliance are consistently achieved. The foreman leads operators and coordinates closely with maintenance, quality, and casting teams.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Operations

Supervise and coordinate furnace operations (reverb, rotary, depending on plant setup)
Oversee scrap charging, melt cycles, temperature control, and metal chemistry adjustments
Ensure adherence to production schedules and throughput targets
Optimize furnace efficiency, fuel consumption, and yield (metal recovery rates)
Monitor and adjust process parameters to maintain consistent alloy composition

Quality Control

Ensure molten metal meets required specifications (composition, temperature, cleanliness)
Coordinate sampling, spectrometer analysis, and corrective alloying additions
Minimize dross formation and manage dross processing procedures
Collaborate with quality team to resolve non-conformance issues

Safety & Environmental Compliance

Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols (molten metal handling, PPE, lockout/tagout)
Identify hazards and implement corrective actions
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and internal environmental standards
Oversee emissions control practices and proper handling of scrap contaminants

Team Leadership

Supervise, train, and develop melt shop operators and furnace crews
Assign daily tasks and manage shift performance
Conduct safety briefings and toolbox talks
Maintain discipline and enforce operational standards

Maintenance Coordination

Coordinate with maintenance for furnace repairs, refractory work, and preventative maintenance
Monitor equipment condition and report issues proactively
Minimize downtime through effective planning and communication

Reporting & Documentation

Track production metrics (output, yield, downtime, energy use)
Maintain logs for furnace operations, temperatures, and alloy batches
Report shift performance to plant management

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED (technical degree preferred)
3+ years of experience in aluminum melting, smelting, or foundry operations
2+ years in a supervisory or lead role
Strong understanding of:
Furnace operations and heat transfer principles
Alloy chemistry and metallurgy
Scrap grading and contamination risks

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in secondary aluminum recycling operations
Knowledge of spectrometry and metal analysis tools
Familiarity with ERP or production tracking systems
OSHA safety training or certifications
