Positon: Registered Nurse – Cardiac Testing Division

Location: Fall River, MA

Job Type: Full Time

Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Cardiac Testing Department Manager and in accordance with the established criteria set forward by this departments accreditation bodies, the RN will evaluate patients referred for exercise/chemical stress testing by reviewing history and performing brief physical examination. Will check for appropriate pre-medication orders, check for noted patient allergies and additional beta blockers, then will discuss findings with cardiologist.

The Cardiac Nurse administers nuclear stress tests, exercise treadmill tests, and exercise stress echocardiograms while providing initial management of cardiac dysrhythmias and documents results.

Essential Job Functions:

Clerical/Administrative

Review Medical Record at time of visit to verify patient demographic & medical data which include the following:

o DOB, referring physician, primary care physician, medication reconciliation, medical/surgical history.

Review last office note; confirm required information (lab, imaging, OR reports, CD’s, etc.) is present
Assist with scheduling new patients
Performs other clerical duties as needed

Clinical (i.e. Nuclear Stress, EKG, Other)

Obtains and interprets prior to exam a health history specifically related to cardiac disease.
Reconciles medications to ensure appropriateness of test (checking for contraindicated meds).Notifies ordering physician if test order needs to be adjusted.
On day of exam obtains health information from patient, perform limited physical exam and explain procedure to patient.
Obtain informed consent from patient.
Assesses lung & heart sounds, oxygen saturation and insert intravenous medication into patient.
Answers any questions and provide emotional support pre, intra and post examination.
Prepares the patient for exam with skin prep and electrode placement.
Enters demographic data into testing monitors in stress rooms
Prepares intravenous medications for chemical testing.
Evaluate and interpret baseline EKG and consult with cardiologist as needed.
Assesses patients’ ability to perform ordered test and modify as needed by exercising patient to chemical or modified.
Observes and records patient vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate and cardiac rhythm) during stress test and for five minutes (or longer if necessary) after completion of exam.
Provide constant interpretation of 12 lead EKG, comparing rest with exercise tracings.
Advises in nuclear stress testing when to administer isotope at appropriate stress level.
Recognizes and initiates therapy for life threatening cardiac dysrhythmias under protocols and in accordance with ACLS standards.
Completes patient worksheets and enter data into Cardiac QA information system.
Responsible for bimonthly code cart checks, reordering medications for both cart and cardiac testing.
Supervision of EKG technician and ensuring appropriateness of duties being performed.
Insert IV when bubble study or contrast is indicated.

Minimum Requirements and Skills:

The Cardiac Testing Nurse has successfully completed education from an accreditation training institution and licensed by the Commonwealth of Mass as a registered Nurse.

· Competency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and successful completion of an AHA sponsored course in ACLS

· Minimum of five years of nursing experience in a similar clinical environment.

· Demonstrated experience with basic Microsoft and EMR software.

· Ability to multitask and prioritize daily workload
