Job Description: Special Education Coordinator

Overview:

The mission of The Sojourner Truth School is to empower students to transform the world. Students at The Truth School will graduate ready for success in college, career, and life. They can walk into any space, find their place, and make a powerful contribution. Truth achieves this vision through a Montessori education built upon student-led classrooms with a learning environment deliberately designed to enable student engagement in meaningful, authentic work and to foster a close-knit community where students pursue justice and practice stewardship.

Sojourner Truth serves a diverse population of 6th-12th grade students in Washington, DC.

Position:

The Sojourner Truth School is seeking a solutions-oriented, highly organized, results-driven, and community-minded leader to serve as the school’s Special Education Coordinator. The Special Education Coordinator will report directly to the Principal and will be an active member of the school’s leadership team. The Special Education Coordinator will have primary responsibility for overseeing Truth’s adherence to Child Find law, the assignment of caseloads of special education students with special education teachers, monitoring and supporting the implementation of all IEPs and 504 plans, ensuring compliance with all local and federal laws relating to IEPs and 504 plans, and coordinating with students’ support teams to ensure that all IEP meetings are facilitated with a supportive and family-centered approach. The Special Education Coordinator will also serve as the director of the school’s Response to Intervention (RTI) systems.

The Special Education Coordinator, like all other staff, should be fully invested in Truth’s two Design Principles:

Students need to be prepared for life, not just for school.
Each student’s identity, voice, perspectives, and choices matter.

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Compliance

Serve as the leader of special education on our high school campus.
Ensure every IEP and 504 plan on campus is correctly managed and implemented.
Oversee universal screening and management of IEP process for new high school special education students
Ensure that SWDs and ELs always have the proper accommodations on assessments and in the classroom.
Development and enforcement of clear criteria and expectations for self-contained classroom.
Manage and supervise the work of the high school Assistant Special Education Coordinator, Diverse Learning Specialist, and Social Worker with formal evaluations provided at least twice a year.
Participate in instructional leadership meetings to advocate for the needs of students with disabilities and ensure equitable access to rigorous instruction.

Collaboration and Support

Manage OSSE transportation as needed for students with disabilities.
Oversee MSAA testing.
Support SPED teachers in their ability to facilitate IEP meetings (model, coach, provide feedback)
Manage the caseload and instruction for any students not being managed and served by others
Support directly in assigned spaces where needed (ex: supporting morning circles, providing lessons, co-planning, etc)
Curates master Special Populations Tracker for HS students
Facilitates weekly SPED team meetings
Assists case managers with challenging cases and behavioral concerns
Reports data and concerns to their respective supervisor
Reviews AED reports as required
Supports the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) in collaboration with the Wellness Team and classroom teachers.
Collaborate with school counselors and administrators to support successful student transitions, including entry, promotion, graduation, and postsecondary planning.

Coordinating to Ensure Appropriate Special Education Services

Oversee organizational implementation of IEPs within assigned Ecosystems
Support directly in assigned Ecosystems as needed (e.g., supporting the morning meeting, providing lessons, co-planning, providing a dedicated aide, etc.).
Provide direct services when a staffing gap exists
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the self-contained classroom
Monitor teacher caseloads.
Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented with fidelity.
Coordinate with related service providers (speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, etc.) to ensure continuity of services.

Qualifications

Motivated by the mission to set a national model for a high-quality, urban public Montessori secondary school;
Demonstrated expertise with compliance around special education;
Experience as a leader providing feedback and coaching to teachers/adults;
Knowledge of educational innovations in instructional strategies, alternative assessment methods, blended learning, and differentiated supports preferred;
Demonstrated experience creating data-driven action plans;
Proven ability to design and lead effective professional development;
Demonstrated successful experience in shared decision-making, program development, staff supervision, and evaluation;
Presence to inspire confidence and passion toward an ambitious vision;
Demonstrated commitment to the potential of all students to succeed in rigorous educational settings;
Training, or willingness to seek training in the Montessori method and its application in the classroom and/or as an administrator;
Master’s degree and at least two years of relevant work experience
