Full Job Description

Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Behavioral Health to join our multidisciplinary healthcare team. This vital role involves providing comprehensive nursing care to individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and co-occurring conditions. The RN - Behavioral Health will assess patient needs, develop individualized care plans, and deliver evidence-based interventions within a supportive environment.

Position: RN-Behavioral Health
Shift: Day 3x12 hours
Contract Duration: 13-weeks (possible extension)
Location: Waterloo, IA
Start Date: 8/24/2026
Pay Rate: $2146/wk. for 36hours.

Responsibilities

Conduct thorough patient assessments, including mental health evaluations, vital signs, and behavioral observations, ensuring accurate documentation within electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, incorporating best practices in behavioral health nursing.
Administer medications securely and accurately, including psychotropic agents and other prescribed treatments, adhering to aseptic techniques and safety protocols.
Monitor patient responses to interventions, managing acute symptoms such as agitation or distress with appropriate de-escalation techniques.
Provide psychoeducation and emotional support to patients and their families, fostering understanding of mental health conditions and treatment options.
Coordinate with physicians, therapists, case managers, and community resources to ensure comprehensive patient care and smooth discharge planning.
Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations and institutional policies while managing sensitive medical documentation.

Experience

Valid RN licensure with current state registration or licensure in good standing.
Demonstrated experience working with individuals experiencing mental health disorders or substance use issues; prior behavioral health nursing experience preferred.
Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic or Cerner; familiarity with medical documentation standards.
Knowledge of psychiatric medications administration including injections and IV infusions.
Experience managing acute pain and crisis situations within a trauma-informed framework.
Background in working with diverse populations including geriatrics, pediatrics, individuals with developmental disabilities, or those requiring long-term or hospice care is highly desirable.
Strong understanding of medical terminology, physiology, pharmacology related to psychiatric treatments, and infection control protocols.
Critical care experience such as ICU or emergency room settings is advantageous but not mandatory.
Ability to perform physical examinations, venipuncture (phlebotomy), suturing assistance, and basic life support (BLS) certification is preferred.
Familiarity with ICD coding (ICD-10/ICD-9), CPT coding for procedures, and laboratory specimen collection enhances clinical effectiveness.
