Full Job Description

Role Description The Sales Estimator role at American Structural Metals, Inc. is a full-time, on-site position based in Edina, MN that requires Structural Steel takeoff/estimating experience (Miscellaneous Metals too, but not required). The Sales Estimator is responsible for reviewing plans and specifications, preparing accurate material and labor takeoffs/estimates, and developing competitive bids for supply of fabricated structural steel (miscellaneous metal too, but not required) for commercial construction projects. Day-to-day tasks include analyzing project requirements, collaborating with detailing and production teams, and clarifying technical details with customers and contractors. The role involves maintaining strong relationships with existing clients, identifying new business opportunities, and providing timely, clear communication regarding project scope, pricing, and schedules. The Sales Estimator also updates internal systems with estimate data, tracks bid outcomes, and supports continuous improvement in estimating processes and standards. Sales Estimators report to the Estimating Manager.

Qualifications

Experience in Structural Steel takeoff/estimating is required (Miscellaneous Metals too, but not required).
Strong customer-facing skills, including Customer Service and Communication, with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
Proficiency in Sales and Business Development, with experience identifying opportunities, preparing proposals, and supporting revenue growth.
Demonstrated capability in Project Estimation, including reading design drawings, interpreting specifications, and calculating material, labor, and fabrication costs.
Solid computer skills and competence with standard office applications (e.g., spreadsheets, documents).
Knowledge of structural steel and miscellaneous metals, fabrication processes, or construction industry practices is strongly preferred.
Strong analytical and math skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
Not a remote position; ability to work on-site in Edina, MN, collaborate in a team setting, and communicate effectively with production, detailing, and management.
Relevant education/experience in construction management, engineering, drafting, or a related field; prior estimating of structural steel is required, experience in misc. metals is a plus.

Responsibilities

Prepare detailed proposals by pricing materials, labor, and overhead costs while ensuring competitive yet profitable bids.
Communicate effectively with clients and internal teams to clarify project details, negotiate terms, and address any scope changes or adjustments.
Manage multiple estimation projects simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
Collaborate with project managers to review contracts, manage cost control measures, and support project planning from inception through completion.
Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Proven experience managing projects as a construction estimator within the commercial construction industry.
Excellent blueprint reading skills with the ability to interpret technical drawings and construction documents.
Solid understanding of construction industry standards including contracts, project management principles, and cost control strategies.
Demonstrated ability to estimate material requirements from blueprints accurately and develop comprehensive project pricing, budgets, etc.
Construction site experience is highly desirable to better understand on-the-ground realities impacting estimates.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including spreadsheets for data analysis and presentation purposes.

Knowledge of construction drawing review processes and estimating for commercial projects is essential.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
