Primary Function:
The Director of Psychiatric Services is responsible for overseeing and supporting all psychiatric providers at Portland Mental Health & Wellness, including clinical consultation and direction when needed, supporting compliance, clinical best practices, and generally being a go-to resource. The Director is responsible for setting and meeting performance goals, financial goals, and other measures of success for psychiatric medication management at the practice.
The Director of Psychiatric Services is responsible for collaborating with other department directors toward the overall success of Portland Mental Health & Wellness. They must have good decision-making skills and the ability to think globally, attend to detail, and creatively collaborate with colleagues and direct reports. The Director will have a clinical caseload of their own, dedicating a portion of their time to direct patient care.
Overall, the Director of Psychiatric Services plays a critical role in overseeing and optimizing the provision of mental health care to individuals seeking psychiatric treatment in an outpatient setting. Essential Functions:
- Center Organizational Culture Principles & Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion Initiatives: this role will be responsible for developing and implementing initiatives that reflect our Organizational Culture Principles (OCPs) and promote diversity, equity, access, and inclusion within psychiatric services and PMHW as a whole.
- Participate in Strategic Planning: As a member of the Executive Leadership team, this role will participate in strategic planning and decision-making to ensure that the practice achieves its goals and objectives. This may involve developing and implementing new initiatives, identifying opportunities for growth, facilitating organizational change and growth initiatives, and collaborating with other departments within the practice.
- Clinical Oversight: The director is responsible for maintaining high standards of clinical care provided by psychiatrists, PMHNPs, and any other mental health professionals in the psychiatric setting. They may provide clinical supervision, guidance, and support to the treatment teams, ensuring that evidence-based practices are followed and that patient care is of the highest quality.
- Program Development and Implementation: The director may be involved in the development and implementation of new programs, services, or treatment modalities. This could involve introducing innovative approaches to therapy, specialized treatment tracks, or other initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes.
- Staff Management: The director is typically responsible for hiring, training, and managing clinical and administrative staff within psychiatric services at PMHW. This includes conducting performance evaluations, addressing staffing needs, and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance: Ensuring that psychiatric services comply with relevant laws, regulations, and professional standards is a crucial aspect of this role. The director may develop and implement policies and procedures to maintain compliance and ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff.
- Patient Care Coordination: The director may play a role in coordinating patient care across different mental health professionals within PMHW. This could involve facilitating case consultations, treatment planning meetings, and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure that patients receive comprehensive and integrated care.
- Budgeting and Resource Management: The director is often responsible for managing the budget for the psychiatric department. This includes allocating resources appropriately, monitoring expenses, and identifying opportunities for cost-effective practices without compromising the quality of care.
- Community Engagement and Outreach: Building relationships with other healthcare providers, community organizations, and stakeholders is important for promoting the services offered by the psychiatric department. - Performance Improvement: Monitoring and assessing the performance of psychiatric services is essential for identifying areas for improvement. - Direct Patient Care: 30% of the director’s time will be spent on direct patient care.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Required: a master’s degree in Nursing, or a doctoral degree in Medicine from an AMA-accredited university.
- Required: appropriate board approved licensing to practice in the State of Oregon with full prescriptive authority and DEA certificate in good standing.
- Preferred: previous experience in outpatient psychiatric services is essential, preferably in a management or leadership role.
- Leadership skills: The director must have strong leadership and management skills to effectively lead a team of psychiatric providers, supervise and evaluate clinical staff, and oversee the day-to-day operations of PMHW’s psychiatric services.
- Business acumen: The director should have a good understanding of the financial and business aspects of the practice, including budgeting, billing, and revenue generation.
- Clinical skills: The director should be knowledgeable in a variety of approaches and have experience working with a diverse patient population.
- Compliance: The director must be knowledgeable of all applicable legal and ethical standards, including HIPAA regulations and state licensing requirements.
- Manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
