Jr Radiological Control Technician

Job Title: Jr Radiological Control Technician

West Valley Cleanup Alliance is the prime contractor selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Phase 1B Deactivation & Demolition Contract at the West Valley Demonstration Project site. The site is a scenic 30-minute drive south of Buffalo, New York. In cooperation with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, West Valley Demonstration Project continues to decontaminate and decommission facilities at this site.

Job summary / purpose of position

Provides radiological support coverage for maintenance, operational, and routine work which involves radioactive materials. Provides monitoring for Radiation, Contamination, and Airborne Radioactivity in the workplace as required by Radiological program procedures and 10 CFR 835. Tasks performed are relatively simple but may require the application of basic skills related to radiation protection. These activities will only be performed under the direct oversight of a qualified Sr. Radiological Control Technician.

Minimum qualifications

A. Education/Experience

High School diploma with courses in algebra, biology, chemistry, and/or physics or equivalent

B. Licenses/Certifications

None.

C. Other requirements

Obtain and maintain DOE Access authorization.
Satisfactory completion of qualification standard for Rad Worker I or Rad Worker II.
Math skill level sufficient to perform simple calculations.

Major responsibilities / scope of work

Maintain a safe and healthful work environment by following established safe work practices and procedures; including following all safety rules, use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE), investigating and reporting identified safety concerns or situations.
Adhere to standards contained in the Company “Code of Conduct,” Company EEO practices, and DOE directives.
Provide assigned technical, administrative, or functional support to the Radiation Protection management team.
Assist in planning of radiological work, monitoring of radioactive work areas, generation of radiological work permits, establishment of radiological work control, and monitoring of radiological workers.
Perform quantitative measurements and document results for radioactive materials shipments, free release of excess material and waste from site.
Support Environmental, Health & Safety (ES&H) activities in the field including, but not limited to, atmospheric monitoring, safety evaluations, self-assessments, and chemical hygiene control programs.
Perform a variety of routine tasks related to radiological, industrial, and chemical safety.
Maintain knowledge of and demonstrate ability to perform work safely in accordance with all approved safety policies, procedures, and application regulations and perform assigned duties in a safe manner.
Actively participate in Safety Work Groups.
Ensure compliance with all applicable company and client technical specifications, procedures, human performance, and safety standards and expectations.
Understand and promote a Safety Conscious Work Environment.
Participate in pre-job briefs at the start of shifts and for scheduled work activities and perform shift turnover duties with assigned personnel or supervision.
Participate in two-minute drills and/or Take a Minute (TAM) in the field prior to the performance of work activities.
Immediately notify Supervision, required site contacts, and prepare documentation of ANY safety or nuclear safety concerns.
Responsible for progress of all assigned work through identification of minor issues, resolution of minor issues, and reporting of major issues to supervision for resolution.
Assist in performing dose rate, contamination, and airborne radioactivity surveys.
Assist with radiation protection support for low and moderate hazard radiological work.
Assist in providing briefings and guidance to plant personnel to prohibit unplanned exposure to radioactive material.
Assist in investigations of events as required and provide requested statements.
Complete RCT qualifications and associated training including on the job training on procedures and radiation protection instruments.
Regular onsite attendance is required.
Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Essential functions

Read and comprehend to follow procedures, write permits, prepare survey maps, write reports, and prepare shipping and transfer permits.
Communicate verbal instructions to others.
Radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control, and other radiation protection activities.
Handle personal protective equipment, other equipment, and assist others in work locations.
Support radiation protection and ES&H activities.
