Full Job Description

Community Resource Center for the Developmentally Disabled (CRC) is committed to enable and support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their efforts to live and participate in the community as a natural right, in order to provide them the opportunities of inclusion, individualization, independence and productivity.

CRC is a not-for-profit community based organization which exists to establish, maintain and operate Intermediate Care Facilities, Individual Residential Alternatives, and to provide programs of care, service, habilitation, rehabilitation, and social/recreational activities geared to the functional capacity and developmental needs of each consumer in our care, so that they may be helped to experience living independently, making meaningful choices, enjoy personal relationships, communicate freely and receive effective services.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Direct Support Professional (hereafter DSP) is responsible for devoting their attention to the care and development of the residents in one of the agency’s residential facilities (ICF or IRA). The DSP relates to each resident in a caring, empathic manner and is ever mindful that they are working in the residents' home. The DSP is a member of the individual's interdisciplinary team. The DSP interacts in a manner which fosters dignity and learning in a way that helps lead the individuals to greater independence. Helps create a homelike atmosphere for residents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of the Direct Support Professional will include, but are not limited to the following:

Provides for the physical care needs of assigned individuals in accordance with the individual's care plan and programs. Promptly attends to personal hygiene needs of residents including but not limited to toileting, bathing and changing soiled linens, positioning of individuals with mobility problems, dressing/undressing, assist with feeding, exercise, transfers to wheelchair and adaptive equipment.
Implements physical therapy techniques in the areas of range of motion, therapeutic positioning, lifting, and transferring protocols and splint and brace application.
Demonstrates an understanding of and implements individual behavioral program activities and documents activities according to program requirements. Assists with personal development and independence of residents. Completes all activities related to skill building as outlined in individual program plans. Trains residents in activities of daily living and helps individuals with self-development, and social skills.
Cleans and maintains adaptive equipment, light maintenance, and light preventative maintenance duties, and participates in maintenance of a safe homelike living environment as needed.
Performs housekeeping, laundry, assists with meal planning and preparation, and purchasing of food and supplies when assigned.
Transports residents in agency vehicles to and from work, shopping, accompanies residents to programs, restaurants, movies, social/recreational outings, and to appointments in area clinics. Serves as a companion to residents when required during hospitalizations.
Ensures that all measures for safety and well-being are maintained at the highest level.
Responds to crisis situations and medical emergencies in accordance with OPWDD standards of care.
Administers appropriate first aid in accordance with established guidelines and accepted first aid practices.
If emergency has caused resident to exhibit behavior that is threatening or dangerous, in accordance with OPWDD approved Behavior Management guidelines, may have to restrain that resident utilizing SCIP techniques to ensure their safety.
Ensures actions are conducted in a manner that prevents abuse and reports immediately to supervisor (or on-call administrator) any allegation of abuse, maltreatment or any alleged violation of consumer rights in accordance with established procedures/protocols.
Dispenses prescribed medications to residents after successful completion of medication administration course and in line with agency protocol.
Participates fully as a member of interdisciplinary team offering input in planning activities and implementing program activities in accordance with the residents’ plan of care.
Works cooperatively with other employees to ensure wellbeing of the home's residents; accepts mandatory assignment of overtime when necessary to maintain level of coverage required for appropriate care of residents.
Prepares concise written logs for recording daily activities including residents' records and other reports as assigned which may be used to verify delivery of appropriate quality care to residents.
Complies with all policies and guidelines set forth in the OPWDD Standards and Corporate Compliance Manual.
Performs related duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Valid New York State Driver’s License and must maintain it in good standing is preferred.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Willingness, and capacity to perform tasks required in a home care setting.
Good interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, employees, residents, and their families.
Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays when necessary.
Ability to analyze problems and determine corrective measures.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED required.
Six months of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred but not required.
Must be approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP) at time of hire or within six months of date of hire.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, write, speak and understand English. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret reports and documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries, concerns or complaints from employees and consumers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Basic understanding of statistics.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to resolve conflicts and mediate stressful situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to lift, move and position adults or children in beds, wheelchairs, toilets, showers, vans, etc. Frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, and pushing and pulling of heavy objects such as furniture and/or wheelchairs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a homelike atmosphere with little or no discomfort due to noise or temperature. Some walking, bending, and standing required in order to photocopy, access files and so forth; work may be performed under pressure and may be, at times, mentally fatiguing; ability to sit for long periods of time necessary.
