Full Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Pre-Op Registered Nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of his/her assigned patients and direction of assigned personnel delivering patient care while in the operating room. The position requires knowledge of both department and ambulatory surgery center policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of nursing care. Interpretive skills, frequent interactive and consultative associations, along with management and supervisory skills are inherent in this position. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory or visual fashion is essential. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is through the spoken word. Written, telephone and manual dexterity skills are required for this position. Communicate with Physicians when necessary. File chart notes and other medical information in appropriate chart, following proper charting procedures.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

High exposure to infectious wastes such as blood and bodily fluids that mandate the wearing of gloves, masks, gowns and goggles for every exposure.
Require pulling up or re-position patients in bed, lift supplies and place equipment on supports
Possess knowledge of planned procedure
Verifies patient’s identification by checking ID band, and chart, patient’s verbal verification
Provides comfort measures for the patient (i.e. tissues, pillows, bedpan, urinals, blankets, etc.) as observed by lack of patient complaints
Communicates pending medications and treatments
Assesses vital signs, airway, pain level and patient status immediately on admission to PACU
Reassesses patient every 15 minutes until discharge from PACU
Assist anesthesia staff with emergency resulting from anesthesia
Administers medication safely and accurately utilizing the seven rights (Right patient, medication, dose, time, route, documentation& right to refuse treatment)
Performs dressing changes using aseptic technique
Be readily available to anticipate the needs of the doctor, anesthesiologist, and the scrub nurse
Adheres to universal guidelines always
Explains all procedures and treatments to patients as they occur
Assesses pain level and acts accordingly
Applies patient monitoring devices upon arrival to PACU
Connects ECG electrodes to cardiac monitor and records rhythm on PACU Record
Monitors intake and outpatient to assist in determining peri-operative fluid/electrolyte balance
Performs special assignment as outlined and defined by Charge Nurse and/or Manager
Responsible and actively involved in the Quality Assessment / Performance Improvement activities
Verifies that all the correct paperwork is in the clinical chart
Documents all the medication(s) that the patient is currently on
Reviews all pre-operative test(s), history & physical and medical clearance from the Primary Care Physician. Notifies Nurse Manager and Anesthesiologist of any abnormalities
Verifies patient information, allergies, planned procedure and surgical site
Documents and communicates patient status, surgical intervention and pertinent information to the Nurse Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
Minimum of year related experience
Registered Nurse license in the State of Florida
Certified Basic Life Support/ACLS/PALS, AIDS, Domestic Violence, Medical Errors and Ergonomics.
Knowledge OSHA, HIPAA, AHCA regulations, and Joint Commission accrediting organization regulations
Effective communication skills: oral, written, and presentation.
Effective positive interpersonal and customer relations skills via telephone and face-to-face interaction.
Maintains Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) as required by Florida Clinical Board
Keeps job related skills current
Maintains regular attendance
Possess knowledge of modern office equipment, systems, procedures and computer skills
