Full Job Description

We are seeking dedicated and collaborative Special Education Teachers to support students in a highly structured, therapeutic school environment focused on individualized learning, emotional regulation, communication, functional living skills, and academic growth.

Position: Special Education Teacher
Location: Wichita, KS
Schedule: Monday – Friday | Daytime School Hours

THE POSITION

The Special Education Teacher provides individualized instruction, classroom management, and behavioral support for students with developmental disabilities, autism, emotional and behavioral disorders, and complex learning needs. This role develops and implements individualized education programs (IEPs), promotes student independence, and collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams and families to support academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth.

Special Education Instruction & Classroom Support

Provide evidence-based specialized instruction in a structured classroom setting
Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavioral support strategies
Adapt curriculum, instructional techniques, and classroom interventions based on student needs and progress
Support student development in communication, social skills, emotional regulation, self-help, and functional living skills
Utilize positive behavior supports, reinforcement strategies, and crisis intervention techniques
Maintain a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed learning environment

Student Progress & Collaboration

Assess student academic and behavioral progress and adjust interventions as needed
Collaborate with therapists, behavioral health professionals, paraprofessionals, and families to support student success
Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and educational planning
Communicate effectively with caregivers, school staff, and leadership regarding student progress and support needs

Documentation & Compliance

Maintain accurate IEP documentation, progress monitoring, incident reporting, and educational records
Ensure compliance with Kansas State Department of Education regulations and special education best practices
Support student safety, confidentiality, and educational rights

Leadership & Professional Development

Mentor and support classroom team members and paraprofessionals
Participate in ongoing training, professional development, and evidence-based educational practices
Contribute to a collaborative, mission-driven, and student-centered school culture

QUALIFICATIONS

SPED Teacher I

Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field required
Valid Kansas teaching license with Special Education credentials required
Valid Kansas driver’s license required

SPED Teacher II

Master’s degree in Special Education or related field required
SPED Teacher I qualifications required

SPED Teacher III

Minimum 15 years of professional teaching experience required
Leadership or administrative certification preferred

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Active Kansas SpEd Teaching License in good standing
Experience working with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, or severe behaviors
Strong classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills
Passion for supporting children with diverse learning and behavioral needs

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position works within a school and residential care environment supporting students with behavioral and developmental challenges. Responsibilities may include standing, walking, assisting students with mobility or daily living activities, and responding to behavioral crises using approved safety and intervention techniques.
