Reports to: Technician Manager

General Job Function:

A PASE overnight clinical manager is a licensed CVT or experienced veterinary technician who will work closely with the veterinarian specialist service leader(s), to manage the nightly operations of their service and oversee the support staff. All support staff within the service will report directly to the clinical managers, who will be responsible for using their technical experience and training to provide progressive, high quality treatment to patients, ensuring proper staffing levels, scheduling, ensuring employee feedback and review schedules are adhered to, managing daily workflow of the service, establishing expectations for the service, establishing lines of communication with other services/departments in the hospital and the referring community, etc. The clinical manager will run the service in a way that aligns with the hospital’s vision, and will have the technician manager, hospital administrator and service head as support. The clinical manager will manage their employees in a way that aligns with PASE’s core values.

Requirements:

Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent
A PASE clinical manager must hold at least a CVT or be actively in pursuit of licensure.
Specialty certification (VTS ECC) is preferred but not required
Experience:
At least five (5) years of veterinary emergency and critical care experience required, specialty experience preferred
Experience in management is preferred.
Required Strengths:
Employee management skills and personal self-confidence in order to moderate and resolve differences between technicians/veterinary assistants in all matters that impact patient services or clients’ perception of the quality or service.
Have a positive, supportive and encouraging attitude towards staff and clients. Express thoughts and ideas effectively.

Capability to organize and carry out leadership decisions and to direct staff through the complete process.

Physical:
Lifting and or carrying up to 40 pounds to waist height.
Restraining and walking animals up to 200 lbs.
Standing and walking on hard surfaces up to 10 hours per day.
Lift and or carry with assistance animals over 40 lbs.
Schedule:
25%-50% Clinical Duties, 50% Administrative Duties
40 hours/week, Overnight hours will be the standard, the clinical manager will be responsible for overlapping with swing shift team to provide enough support to achieve all other goals stated. The amount of time spent with the swing team will be established by the clinical manager provided it will provide appropriate support as determined by the head of service and hospital administrator.
On-call availability to be discussed, additional wages and on-call fee provided for after-hours anesthesia cases.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Follow all responsibilities in the Job Description for a ECC Veterinary Technician.
Given the nature of ECC, the clinical manager will be relied on heavily to contribute to technician training within and outside of the department. This may include:
Providing oversight/training to technicians learning and performing emergency and critical care in other services
Assisting the ECC in developing training and assessment materials
Developing and refining the leveling system as it pertains to ECC at PASE.
Establish lines of communication with all services and departments and ensure all hospital-level lines of communication are maintained. This entails ensuring email groups and Slack groups are maintained, and that newly on-boarded employees are added. E-mail and Slack responsiveness is expected. Work with the Operations Manager to ensure employees have access to all hospital programs and technology.
Respond to employee inquiries and concerns. Deliver feedback to team members when appropriate, in a kind and respectful manner. These may involve discussions with the Head of Emergency Medicine, the Head of Critical Care and other team members both within and outside of the department. Demonstrate ability and willingness to hold employees accountable to all established standards, which may involve enacting disciplinary action at times.
Ensure employees are given consistent opportunities to provide feedback.
Follow a consistent review process.
Ensure employees have the opportunities to advance their own skills and knowledge.
Ensure consistent interaction with PASE’s clinical educators to enable advancement and leveling up.
Manage the service leveling checklist and keep it up to date
Meet regularly with the technician manager and HR administrator for support with onboarding, following review schedules, merit increase schedules, staffing needs, hospital policy support, benefits support, employee concerns, etc.
Maintain and organize logistical components of the service including the schedule of team members, on-call schedule, PTO, vacation. Managing call-in fees, production benefits, as well as double-checking time cards for accuracy (with support from Technician Manager and Accounts Payable Manager).
Manage attendance issues . Meet regularly with management for support with onboarding, following review schedules, merit increase schedules, staffing needs, hospital policy support, benefits support, employee concerns, etc.
Ensure DEA, OSHA, and other regulatory standards are followed. Commitment to developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to emphasize consistent, safe, efficient, and progressive medicine and workflow. Ensure all new protocols, SOPs, procedures, and policies are communicated effectively to the team in a timely fashion.
Work with the Technician Manager, Head of Emergency Medicine and the Head of Critical Care to improve daily workflow, manage developing caseload, and maintain excellence of morale within the service.
Participate in service meetings and PASE management meetings.
Hold staff meetings regularly, consistently and as-needed.
Demonstrate commitment to representing the hospital at community events, outreach events, educational events, conferences, recruiting events, etc. (as deemed necessary).
Any additional tasks or responsibilities as determined by the Technician Manager, head of Head of Emergency Medicine and the Head of Critical Care and hospital management.
