Full Job Description

SURGERY SCHEDULER/SURGICAL COUNSELOR

Status: Full-time; non-exempt

Reports to: Practice and Surgery Center Administrators

Job Description: The Surgery Scheduler will provide patient scheduling for surgeries that result from patient exams and evaluations. This position must understand all aspects of scheduling and help educate the patient on the upcoming surgery. The Surgery Scheduler will assist each patient in understanding their financial responsibility associated with the upcoming surgery. This position collects all patient payments, either at the time of scheduling or prior to the surgery; complete patient consent forms; address patient questions; obtain pre-authorizations, when needed; explain details around the upcoming surgery; and assist other schedulers as needed.

Job Responsibilities:

Coordinate all aspects of surgery scheduling, including cataract, LASIK, cornea, glaucoma, oculoplastic and retina.
Meet with patient and family to schedule surgery and any necessary pre‑operative testing and post-operative visits.
Provide pre-operative instructions to patient.
Explain details around the surgery and answer patient and family inquiries.
Prepare all necessary and required paperwork.
Complete all forms as required by EIU (or outside facility where the patient is being scheduled for the procedure) guidelines.
Secure and witness signed EIU approved consent forms. Understand the definition and guidelines of the informed consent process.
Arrange for interpreting services.
Provide all information to billing department needed to ensure proper insurance billing.
Confirm insurance/billing information is correct.
Obtain pre-authorization from insurance carriers, when needed.
Arrange finances for self-pay patients or patients incurring out-of-pocket expenses.
Communicate with billing department on patients who are covered by non-contracted insurance carriers or out-of-state.
Assist and fill-in for other schedulers when absent.
Other duties as assigned.

Other Job Requirement:

Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrates quality patient service during interactions with patients, coworkers, and vendors.
Exhibits a positive attitude and is flexible in accepting work assignments and priorities
Understanding and ability to describe ophthalmic surgeries to patients including cataract, LASIK, cornea, glaucoma, oculoplastic and retina.
Meets attendance expectations.
Understanding job duties and special functions of the other schedulers.
Meet regularly with other schedulers and administrator to review workload, responsibilities, training, etc.
Is dependable; follows policies and procedures.
Maintains professionalism in interactions with patients and coworkers.
Performs quality work and consistently exhibits initiative.

Job Qualifications:

High school diploma, college degree preferred.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong math and calculation skills.
Healthcare, scheduling and customer service preferred.
Basic ophthalmic and medical terminology a must.
Ability to sit for long periods of time.
Strong organizational skills.
Proficient computer skills including Microsoft products.
