FIREFIGHTER / EMT (CAREER) & FF/PARAMEDIC (CAREER)

The Town of Douglas Fire Department is accepting applications for the full-time position of Firefighter/EMT and FF/Paramedic. Candidates must be able to successfully complete a CORI and background investigation, HRD medical physical exam and DOT Drug Screening, HRD physical ability test (PAT), and the full-time ten week Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Recruit Training Program or equivalent as a condition of employment.

Minimum Qualifications:

FF I/II Certification,
Nationally Registered EMT-Basic with ability to obtain Massachusetts EMT-B Certification within 45 days of hire
BLS CPR
Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License

Desired qualifications:

EMT-B/A enrolled in a paramedic certification program
EMT-Advanced
EMT-Paramedic Certification
Completion of Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Recruit Training Program or equivalent.

Salary Range (Base) Step 1 – Step 5

FF/EMT-Basic: $71,053 - $77,081
FF/EMT-A: $76,732 - $83,254
FF/Paramedic: $85,322 – $92,572

Candidates may be started at a higher step (step 10 or higher) depending on experience and qualifications. Additional benefit plus other monetary incentives based on the IAFF Local 5061 Collective Bargaining Agreement

JOB DESCRIPTION:

FIRE DEPARTMENT – FIREFIGHTER (CAREER)

Reports to: Captains and Lieutenants

NATURE OF WORK:

A career firefighter performs fire suppression, rescue, hazard control, emergency medical services that protect life, property, and the environment. Tasks may be performed under general supervision of a company officer and/or chief officer. The career firefighter often must take actions and make decisions based on their own knowledge and experiences and often, without close supervision. The work is performed under widely varying environmental conditions. The work may require strenuous exertion for extended periods of time. It is often performed in emergency situations where death, trauma and/or property damage have occurred. Because of the aforementioned, the work can be very stressful. Position may require the firefighter to work overnight and shifts of extended duration.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Performs suppression, rescue, and emergency medical care along with hazard control and related duties.
Operates emergency vehicles including fire department pumps and aerial ladders.
Operates equipment at emergency and non-emergency incidents include including, but not limited to, hydraulic tools, power tools, hand tools, SCBA, and medical equipment.
Perform ice and water rescue operations using specialized equipment.
Identifies hazardous products and protects the public from such conditions until specialize trained personnel arrive on scene.
Detects and preserves evidence of fire origin and cause.
In absence of a full time officer, may act as a shift supervisor, or Officer In-Charge (OIC).
Maintains vehicles, tools, and other equipment assigned to them.
Performs daily station maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep.
Performs daily and monthly preventive maintenance of apparatus and equipment.
May assist in fire prevention activities.
May assist in the instruction of certain training activities.
Takes command at fires until arrival of superior officers. As Incident Commander, develops action plan, directs operations, and assigns duties to sector chiefs and company officers.
May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Education or GED
Non-Tobacco User
Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License
Pass CORI & Detailed Background Check
Meets Commonwealth of Massachusetts HRD Initial-Hire Medical and Physical Ability Test (PAT) Standards
Completion of Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Recruit Training Program or equivalent.
Firefighter I/II Certification
Hazardous Material Operation Level Certification or equivalent
EMT- Basic
Incident Command (ICS 100, 200, 700)
Positive record and team player.
Proven record of compliance with department guidelines and policies.
Proven skill/ability in all aspects of firefighting and emergency services.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Unrestricted mental and physical ability to perform required tasks solo or in concert with others under routine and/or extreme emergency conditions – See Commonwealth of Massachusetts Firefighter Task List.
Knowledge of methods likely to be effective in fighting fires of various types.
Knowledge of varied kinds of firefighting equipment and apparatus.
Knowledge of the location of target hazards, streets, the particulars of the community (i.e. run cards, hydrant locations, water sources).
Knowledge of types of fire alarm communications and radio procedure within the fire department.
Knowledge of procedures likely to be effective in enlisting support of citizens and others in taking fire precautionary measures.
Ability to safely drive and operate fire department apparatus as assigned.
Ability to understand, accept, and follow order, protocols, directive, or guidelines under both emergency and non-emergency situations.
Ability to use and wear personal protective equipment and clothing such as hearing protection, foot, hand, head, and respiratory protection.
Ability to take a leading part in establishing and maintaining cooperative and helpful relationships with internal and external customers.
Ability to work and live cooperatively with teams of personnel in station, training, and on emergency or non-emergency scenes for extended periods of time.
Ability to remain cool and decisive in emergency situations.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
